I used to shop at Chris's store (the beguiling) when i lived in Toronto, and not being a fan of Manga at all, I still bought e few titles here and there. Why? Because Chris personally recommended them to me. i trusted his judgment and he also, in one case at least, offered to take the book back if I didn't love it (I did end up loving it...).
What's my point? I'm still not a manga reader (I don't go to the big box stores and buy it or read it) but if my LCS guy says I'll like it, I generally give it a try. Now that I live in a small northern town in Ontario, I no longer have that advantage, but there are probably plenty of people like me, familiar with the direct market, who would read some manga, if only their LCS would promote it to them.
On the flip side, for those kids who do go buy volumes of the stuff at the big box - well, maybe the publishers and direct market have to find a way to let them know that all the stuff they can't find on Borders shelves is available in specific comic shops. As everyone is pointing out, not all comic shops carry manga, so at this point, publishers might want to start getting specific (maybe a list of independent stores in the back of the volumes might help?).
Anyway, just some ideas on the brain there, and directly into your comments section. Clearly, I have no marketing background... :)
