I kinda missed "the American way' in the Superman Returns. Not because Superman lacks moral clarity or something, he's generally speaking DC's least "dark" or "edgy" hero. His vision of the American way isn't something that was ever really in practice, but it's nice to think it was something we aspired to. For a while at least, it seemed the Jack Bauer's of the fictional world instead got to characterize what the American way should be.

Well said. Thanks for overlooking the obvious issues with all three stories and getting to the heart of the matter.

Extremely good article. The overarching purpose of heroic figures/superheros is to represent human dilemma (and not-so-human philosophical dilemma) in a heroic setting that people would find interesting.

The fractionalization of this general market into at-odd camps seem to deny the legitimacy, if you will, of particular character portrayals -- because of their sex, political viewpoint, personal behavior, etc. If the general comics market is to flourish, given the rapidly declining use of print-information medium, the industry needs to remain open to comic markets that previously had little-to-no acceptance. I find it hard to believe extremists on either side of any of these arguments would argue otherwise.

Lisa, great point about the underlying theme of empowerment that is central to the superhero genre -- not the outer trappings! My PW column coming out this week hits on the same point.

And, may I say, it is that very theme that makes superheroes so very ripe for political metaphor! There is no reason that the genre should be an escape from real-world issues. It can be, but to limit any genre's scope because of personal preference is foolish, I think.

Great points, Lisa. The comments on Bill Willingham's editorial (and the editorial itself) seem to miss the point about comics being fun. A lot of people lately, both liberals and conservatives, would like to place political labels on what should be escapes from politics.
