It’s amazing that Larsen is complaining about people stealing ideas when, as a friend pointed out, he’s having Savage Dragon meet golden age Dare-devil (the half red, half blue guy with the boomerangs) that Dynamite and Alex Ross have been telling stories with for about a year or so. Sure, those guys are in the public domain, but so is Obama.

Accusing some one of essentially plagiarizing should never be taking lightly and needed to be responded to. Although Larsen has downplayed it, what Larsen did was do mindless speculating without
I also check CBR and Newsarama and did not hear at all about the SD Obama appearance. Larsen also forgets that Obama beings a fan plays a huge part in the appearance. The timing was because of the inauguration, not to steal the lack of thunder SD had.
Also, Marvel has no indication that this is Obama’s first appearance in comic book. The well known IDW Presidential Material received sizable media coverage, so their would be know point claiming that.
Finally, it appears the nature of the Obama appearance is different as well. Larsen effectively endorsed Obama by his SD story. In Spider-man, Obama has a normal celebrity/politician appearance in a story. Obama did not appear until after the election. It would be irresponsible for Marvel to show favoritism toward a candidate during an election.
Also, Wacker’s statement “that he does not read Savage Dra” is not a slight against Larsen. His words later in the post: “None of this is meant as a knock on Erik’s considerable body of work and his creation Savage Dragon. I don’t read it, but I certainly recognize that it’s an incredible accomplishment to create something that lasts this long and to find a way to write and draw that many issues. You should all go read it”
Wacker was posting as his position as an editor. It is not an official statement by Marvel. Sure marvel has moniters of previews and websites, but Wacker himself probably does not do it himself, as he is busy being an editor.

The funny thing is, what I’ve read of Obama’s interpretation in Thunderbolts (which has roughly ZERO publicity outside the comics world), is much better than his appearances in both Savage Dragon AND Amazing Spider-Man.

Does any of this really matter? Obama will go on and Savage Dragon and Spider-Man will keep getting printed. Spider-Man will conitnue to outsell Savage Dragon. And Savage Dragon will continue to have great vocail fans who will defend it, Erik Larsen and his actions forever. There’s nothing anyone can do to change that. So argue all you want, Erik will get nothing to stop his complaints and Marvel conitnue to sell books.

Freddie, I haven’t been offended by what folks are saying on here, and I really like the comments that take the time explore this issue and comics’ relevence in politics and pop culture, but the people that take the time to throw up “Who cares? Savage Dragon is Hulk with a fin and sucks anyway!” wastes everybody’s time, has nothing to do about the Obama issue (pun intended). Those comments are definitely up here, because I’ve read ‘em, and the reason I usually don’t throw two cents in here is the apparent need to say something snide behind the anonimity of the Internet. Even your comment, while good-natured, didn’t the need the “it isn’t about you” tag at the end, but it’s easy for you to say and is second-nature to the fanboy dialogue that goes on here. Some folks have said Dragon and/or Erik stink, other Dragon/Erik fans have jumped his offense very quickly, so it’s about ALL of us that engage in a conversation in a meaningful way!

You’d think after reading all this that everyone that is knocking Erik probably had a run-in with him at some point in their life or work for Marvel. Some of you guys are way to emotional, its as Erik dissed you or he’s your b!tch, Let Erik say what he wants to say, the feud is between him and Marvel! Bottom line is both comics are selling well at the moment (Savage Dragon #137 & #145 “Obama cover” according to pre-orders), which is a good thing for comics. I personally don’t care who thought of it first I bought them both and I’m waiting for more to come out, Both companies have my support, Obama all the way!
