Re: the DMZ cover, there's no reason that the red finger isn't representing both ink AND blood: certainly the ink from recent elections in, particularly, Iraq and Afghanistan is one allusion. However, with "BLOOD IN THE GAME" right below the fist and the ink being red (vs. blue or purple or another deep color), it would be crazy to think that that wasn't another allusion.

I wish a Northlanders cover made it on the list, as I was loving those every month (esp. Issue 9, but these are all great too.

Kevin,

Thank you so much for including The Boy Who Made Silence. I feel really lucky to be in that list, with so many of the covers working, in my opinion, so much better than mine. I was at APE I think it was, and the S.O.S. cover was enlarged as a booth graphic and in clear view from my booth. I kept looking at it all day, thinking, damn, now THAT is a nice cover. So subtle. Thanks again!

Kevin Melrose said: "Oh, good catch. You may be right."

Thanks! :)

When I read that issue of DMZ I remembered the ink-staining from coverage of elections in Afghanistan and Iraq and guessed the finger on the cover was election-in-a-war-zone imagery. Then when I did the Google image search I learned it's used in Bolivia, Cambodia, India, Iran, Kenya, Zimbabwe, etc. too so I realized it could simply be election imagery.

You're not the only one who guessed that. See http://www.bkv.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12406 for more. ;)

With the Y the Last Man cover, beyond the hope/hopelessness, when I first saw it I was thinking that it was going to be a cop out with him being crazy and the whole thing having been in his head. I thought the toy monkey was there to show where that element of his fantasy came from, the fact that he was stuck in the straight jacket implied to me that in his fantasy he was an escape artist, and the boy was there to show that there definitely were other males.
