The heroes “killed” him, but as an energy-being, that was apparently a temporary state. Mainly, they were ripping him apart to disrupt the Dark Arcana’s ability to claim that particular rift, so even temporarily messing him up would have done the job. If they hadn’t been outmaneuvered.

All of which is a long way of saying that he shoulda been “dead” but got drawn into #39 by mistake and since he’s an energy-being it didn’t seem to be a problem that he could have reformed by then.

In addition to what others said about the frog, I think its fate represents Konvikt’s ultimate decision that sacrificing innocents is acceptable. Notice that as he leaps away, he causes a big shockwave that’ll no doubt cause those animals a good deal of bodily harm.

IanJN: I got that it was a flashback, but I didn’t think Konvikt was interacting enough with the frog to be reminded of Graak.

It reminds Konvikt of Graak. The pages following, with Gotham City and Graak’s death, are a flashback.

Excellent issue, BTW.

Dunno about Shift, but could that be Sandy “Sandman” Hawkins, shifting (ha!) into his silicon form? It kinda looks like the front of a gas mask to me.
