>> as well as alluding to this classic story arc. (by the way, am I the only one who picked up on that reference? I haven’t seen anyone else in the blogosphere pick up on it) >>

You're not the only one. It's discussed in the comments here: http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2009/02/11/batman-686-review/

And here: http://www.thecomicforums.com/forum2//lofiversion/index.php?t149236.html

And here: http://dcboards.warnerbros.com/web/message.jspa?messageID=2005149369

...among other places.

And DC helpfully reprinted that 4-parter in THE STRANGE DEATHS OF BATMAN, just recently.

Finally have a copy of Brunetti's Anthology of Graphic Fiction vol. 2 with that delicious Clowes cover; absolutely perfect-satisfying read, reminding why I love the medium as much as I do with most every page...and as soon as I'm done rereading Scott Pilgrim vol. 4, I'll bust out my copy of vol. 5 (it's a little tradition I do with every release).

Also Dark Avengers was almost too much genuine fanboy awesomeness to even handle in one comic, I make no apologies for loving it, fun and funny.
