Comments on: Add Black Canary, Captain Atom to DC’s ‘co-feature’ roster

Canary’s got a backup feature in the ‘Green Arrow’ comics [I noticed one of the recent comics had the list, and it only mentioned Arrow without the Canary- presumably to go along with Ollie's decision to be a hard travelling hero again]. Honestly, after all the character growth during the Birds of Prey run, the last couple of years have been a huge step back for Dinah. Before Birds of Prey, she was weak and almost incapable of putting up the fight her skills suggested. She grew to demonstrate a fierce warrior’s spirit, and even a few months ago didn’t mind putting the Trinity in its place in the Justice League. Overal, however, it seems like getting her away from the Birds of Prey comic has resulted in writers using her as little more than a supporting character. She is barely visible in a JLA she has chaired, and has been depicted as too weak a leader to inspire heroes to be a part of the JLA. In her own series, after a bright start, recent issues have seen her be a supporting character to Green Arrow and sometimes in need of rescues she wouldn’t have needed two years ago. I would love to see her back with Gail Simone again, ‘cos the JLA and Arrow/Canary writers clearly don’t rate her very highly…

Martin, saying that Captain Atom needs to be redeemed is to acknowledge that the events of what rwe1138 rightly terms that “whole…fiasco” ever really happened. As far as I’m concerned, Cap has not put in an appearance since the end of Captain Atom: Armageddon. As such, I’m very much looking forward to this new backup feature. I just hope that whoever is writing it, whether it’s Robinson and Johns or whoever, is someone who gets the character. There have been few writers since Bates and Weisman who really understood what makes Cap unique and interesting.

Ryan, I agree with you that it would be great to see Huntress get a backup feature, especially since the Canary already shares a title with Green Arrow and leads the Justice League, and since Birds of Prey has been canceled, at least for the nonce.

Manhunter remains the only one I have a real significant interest in. They seem to be really embracing this. What % of the line is going to be with backups now? It is starting to be significant.

Not sure how to feel about these co-features anymore. they were great at first when there were a select few. Now, it seems like every few days is a new co-featuer announcement, which just means more $3.99 books. Gone is the elation of obscure favourites showing up and now the grim reality that there are a half dozen or more $3.99 monthlies to contend with and, more than likely, more on the way.

I think Captain Atom’s going to be in one of the Superman books.

Robinson and Johns were talking about using him quite a bit during last year’s con season. So something tells me that’s where he’ll turn up.

Maybe they’re splitting the title up again?

Or turning GA/BC into a two-feature book, with separate GA and BC stories?

I’d love to see the back-up features used for work that’s a bit more visually daring — or a bit less like the DC house style. That would make me interested.
