Incredibles #1, Muppet Show #1 sell out, second printings planned

BOOM! Studios sent out a press release tonight saying both The Incredibles: Family Matters #1 and The Muppet Show Comic Book #1 have sold out from Diamond Comics. According to the release, “tremendous re-order activity just prior to both comics release ensured a sell out before either comic hit stands this Wednesday.”

Second printings of both books should be available by the end of April.

“I’ve never seen anything like this. Sure, with the current economic climate, we are definitely printing more conservatively than years before, but even so, the velocity of late in the game re-order activity for these books have been totally out of this world,” said Chip Mosher, BOOM!’s marketing and sales director, in the release. “Those re-orders ate up all the leftover stock at Diamond and then some. Not in our wildest dreams could we predict that we would effectively be sold out the day before these books hit the stands. Once we saw what was happening, we went into overdrive to get second prints of both books rolling into Diamond.”

Earlier today BOOM! announced a newsstand distribution deal with Kable Distribution Services, while yesterday they launched a new website to promote their Disney/Pixar titles under the BOOM! Kids imprint.

So if the Muppet Show is such a hot seller, how come none of the comics shops in my area have it and have told me they doubt they’ll order it, because they think (their words) there’s not enough demand for it?

My thinking is that Boom printed the first issue conservatively in order to gauge interest. Apparently it’s a hit. All stores, including comic shops, are being hit hard by the economic times and are tightening their belts. Sadly, some people just don’t believe in the Muppet brand anymore. That’s what this comic along with many other planned projects is attempting to remedy. Boom has also inked a deal for wider release of their comics – including the Muppets – at newsstands everywhere. They won’t be hard to find for long. I had no problem. Hope that answers your question. It’s a really good comic book.

It’s helping to nail the coffin on brick & mortar comics shops, but if you wanted it and your LCS didn’t stock it, then buy it from an online shop. Or, like James says, wait for it to hit newstands.

I’m not sure how easy they’ll be to find, or what stores will carry them, but it’s great to see someone getting comics out on newstands again. I loved going to the drug store or grocery store each week, as a kid, and buying comics (or baseball cards, or Star Wars action figures) with my allowance.

What angers me = my LCS not getting their initial orders. My store got ZERO copies of Muppet Show, Incredibles, or CARS this coming week. I pre-ordered, too. I use Previews. Diamond let my store down.
Makes me very angry with BOOM and DIAMOND.
