I always remembered Steranko's advice: "Be SO good that they can't afford NOT to hire you!" Personally, I feel that I was never that good....but have been lucky enough in the past to get hired anyway. It probably had more to do with holding an editor by the throat and holding his ass over an empty elevator shaft (9 floors up, preferably), and pointedly reminding him AGAIN why it would be a GREAT idea if he put me on as a regular on one of his books...or, something to that effect..!!! Or, to quote Larry Hama:"Who says violence never solves anything? It solved Hitler, didn't it?!"

Chester is an awesome person. I've been following his twitter account for a while now and he's always giving great advice.

As someone who just put his first Comic Book proposal together:
http://shannoncronin.com/lifespan/2772.html

I tried to listen his advice, as well as the advice of others when putting it together.

PS. I'm loving the Robot 6 column. Sam and Kevin are doing a fantastic job!

Good advice...thanks for the post. I have found that the hardest part is getting to the editors and finding places to send your work. It is hard for some of us to make it to a con. Thanks again.

C.B. is a great guy who really seems to love the medium. He helped me land my first, and my current, gigs with Marvel. While I prefer to work on my own thing most of the time it's a lot of fun to work on someone else's property from time to time.

Everything laid out here is pretty solid. They're good general rules.

JCruz -There's that other saying in comics, "You can be Good, Fast, or Nice. Master two of those things and you're good to go." Spend the time to put some really solid work in your portfolio regardless of how long it takes you to get it done. Editors know that when a deadline is tight you'll have to cut some corners and they'll cut you slack. Not that you need my unsolicited advice! :)

"The two main things we look for are style and storytelling. Speed is something we learn and judge later."

F@&*!!!! THIS REALLY PISS ME OFF. The first thing they told at ... school is that "it doesnt matter how good you are if you cant make the deadlines", witch is true, but I being following this rule and my work doesn't show the best I can do.

P.S. Im not expecting a reply, just need it to let it out

CB's a great guy, and the truth echoes trough him.
These guidelines aren't simple but true, comics are a very sophisticated medium, so is entering in two of the planet's biggest publisher's...

It's whole wide world out here.

This sounds only like a publicity ploy after Marvel's recent announcement that open submissions are a thing of the past.

And everybody knows that you have to prove yourself in the industry BEFORE Marvel will give you a try. Either that, or be a friend of Quesada or a Hollywood bigwig. Noobs need not apply.
