What’s the over/under on when Steve Rogers will return?
Yesterday’s Marvel solicitations for June included a renumbered Captain America #600, featuring all sorts of special anniversary content from previous Cap creators (including Joe Simon):
CAPTAIN AMERICA #600
Written by ED BRUBAKER with MARK WAID, ROGER STERN & OTHERS
Pencils by BUTCH GUICE, LUKE ROSS, DALE EAGLESHAM & OTHERS
Cover by STEVE EPTING
50/50 Cover by ALEX ROSS
Where were you when Captain America died? It’s the anniversary of the day Steve Rogers was killed, a day of reflection and mourning in the Marvel U…a time to look back on the things Steve did and what he stood for… or is this issue actually the beginning of the most wicked plot twist since issue 25? Yeah, actually it’s both. Plus, contributions from Cap creators past and present, including a very special essay by Joe Simon, a classic story from Cap’s Golden Age, a full gallery of 600 Cap covers, and more anniversary shenanigans than you can shake a shield at!
104 PGS./New and Reprints/Rated T+ …$4.99
But will this special issue see the return of Steve Rogers in more than just a flashback?
It wasn’t anything I was really anticipating or expecting until I saw this post on Robot 6 contributor Lisa Fortuner’s blog. Apparently Lisa and Melissa Krause have a bet going about when Steve Rogers will return from the dead.
“We’re both completely convinced that Steve Rogers will be back very soon,” Lisa wrote, but they don’t agree on when. Melissa thinks it’ll be in an anniversary issue (such as, say, issue 600) while Lisa thinks it will “coincide with a date or an event rather than an issue number. I expected Steve Rogers to be resurrected on the month of his 70th Anniversary issue, in a special 4th of July or Sept 11th issue, or just before the movie comes out,” she said.
But after seeing the solicitations, Lisa thinks she’s about to lose some money. “There’s a chance I can keep my ice cream money in June (maybe if someone from Marvel sees this blogpost and goes ‘oh shit, the fans are on to us!’) but it’s so slim it’s under five on the BMI scale.”
So what do you think — is it time for Steve to return, or is Marvel better off keeping Bucky behind the shield for awhile longer? I personally wasn’t wild about the new Cap at first, but he’s really grown on me since then. So I’d like to see him keep the costume for a little while longer.

Based on the way sales are working out, I wouldn’t expect to see Steve back until about 3 months (give or take) before his movie.

I don’t think Steve Rogers will be back until 2010 at the earliest (summer 2010, I’m guessing, maybe July 4th).
The twist in Cap #600? Bucky will die and be replaced by MODOK.

I don’t get why everyone is so certain Steve will come back…it’s silly. Character’s like that don’t return until the sales of the book warrant it…as soon, or if, people lose interest in Bucky and sales drop, Steve will be back. The movie won’t guarantee his return either, as there’s his Ultimate U counterpart still kicking around in monthly books. Personally, I’d like to see someone related to the Truth mini become Cap, and have Bucky be the Winter Solider (though “good”) and a member of his cast…he was more interesting when he wasn’t trying to “live up to the legacy,” as so many heroes have done in other books.

The big twist in 600, probably something along the lines of, Sharon’s baby isn’t really dead.

I’d like to see Steve Rogers return to end the Dark Reign of Norman Osborne. I like Bucky but he is still Bucky-Cap or the Winter Soldier to me.

is there any chance that the Steve Rogers from Avengers / Invaders could hang around after that series is over?

I doubt Bru will bring Steve back. With DC bringing back Ollie, Hal and Barry in the past few years, the whole “return from the grave” thing has become very cliche. Not to mention that Marvel has brought back some characters themselves, including Bucky to begin with.
Chances are it’ll be some Hollywood writer that gets to bring back Steve.

Man, I hope Steve Rogers never comes back.
Not every character in comics needs to take their cues from Jean Grey.
Let the dead stay dead. Please.

As much as I don’t care for Bucky America, and still think that Cap’s death was meaningless, it’s clear that I am in a very small minority. Everyone else loves Bru’s work on this series and is happy with Bucky instead of Steve. There is no reason at all to bring Steve back anytime soon. And I can’t imagine that Bru wants to bring him back, either.
That said, no superhero stays dead for good now. I expect Steve to return sometime close to the arrival of the film. And not while Bru is writing the book. And if he does return under Bru’s watch after all, I fully expect Bucky to keep the shield and the name and for Steve to retire.

I hope to hell it’s the beginning of Steve Rogers return. Marvel has always been about the character over the costume and Steve Rogers IS Captain America. Anyone else is just a stand-in.
Bucky’s return has been cool and I’ve enjoyed the story but I want to read stories about Captain America, not some BS “legacy” crap. If I liked that stuff, I’d read a DC comic.

Id rather he stay dead, but I suspect we’ll see him back for whatever the ‘end of Dark Reign’ event will be, which could coincide with his upcoming movie. However, DC ‘killed’ Batman and advertised about his upcoming death prior to The Dark Knight movie, so maybe Marvel will forgo the return of Rogers and let Brubaker keep telling his stories with Bucky.

I don’t think Steve will be back in a way we expect it. If Brubaker has any say in the matter (and I hope he does) Steve will return in the most unexpected way possible at a time when everyone is looking elsewhere. I love that Marvel is letting Bru run the Cap book as he sees fit with very little interference from outside stories (like Secret Invasion etc) and part of that is the fact that Steve is dead. If it were still Steve in the uniform we’d have seen a very different book these last couple of years. Instead we have been treated to a title that is consistently good, not great, not awesome but just plain good. Which is a rarity these days. And from what I can tell sales are good so if it aint’ broke why fix it? As long as the quality stays at the same consistent level it’s been at I’m happy with Bucky in the uniform.
I also don’t think we’ve seen the last of the Sharon/baby story either. She was locked up with Faust, Zola and Skull for a long time. Who knows what those freaks did to her and the baby. Could be we’ll see the baby in an incubator and grown to maturity then used as a body for Skull somewhere down the line.

maybe i’m naive, but i don’t see why they’d bring rogers back even when the movie comes out…they can just explain the legacy again in the books as i’m sure bucky will be featured in the film.
plus, it’d be pretty soon to bring back steve. if and when he returns i doubt brubaker will be writing the book. or that quesada will be e-i-c for that matter

I hope it’s sooner than later. Bucky’s boring the hell out of me.

Then you obviously don’t understand how Brubaker (or extended storylines) work. Rogers will be back, and when he is I’ll start buying Marvel again.
