Vaughan & Chiang's "Paper Girls" Builds a Familiar Yet Disconcerting World
The annual Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday, the comic book “holiday” where shops all over the world give away free comics. Many retailers will host special events and signings as well, which I’ll collect and post right here at Robot 6.
If you’re a creator or retailer involved with or hosting a FCBD event, please drop me a note about your plans. Today’s update includes a whole bunch of events, from Pennsylvania to Idaho.
Comics on the Green in Scranton, Penn. will have Scott Beatty on hand to sign copies of his new book from Dynamite, Buck Rogers:
This year we have DC (Robin Year One, Batgirl Year One, Gotham Knights) & Dynamite Ent. writer, SCOTT BEATTY, debuting his new BUCK ROGERS comic from Dynamite Ent. We also have someone coming in to do face-painting for the kids, etc. The event runs from 11-5, and Scott intends to be there the entire time
Ultimate Comics, which has three shops in North Carolina, is using Free Comic Book Day to announce several special events they have planned throughout the year. Manager Lee Newman provided information on their approach:
Ultimate Comics is a three store chain in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. We have been around for about 5 years at this point and have almost a thousand active pull box customers.
While we will have Ben Lichius, creator of Ape Entertainment’s Black Coat, in store for a signing, we take a different approach to FCBD than most shops. It has been our busiest day of the year for four years now. We have massive sales put into the register on the day. Thing is, the way we see it, FCBD is meant to get people in the stores, so it becomes our job to get the people back.
Last year, we used it as a platform to announce our sales for the coming month. This succeeded in getting sales up for the next four weekends and then we sort of went into the normal patterns we see for summer comics sales. This was of course useful and helped us retain many of those first time visitors to the shops.
This year we are approaching it very differently as well. While we will have in store sales and will announce the immediate plans for sales for the next few weeks, we are approaching it as a way to get folks excited about our stores. We will be making announcements regarding our events coming up. FCBD 2009 will see the launch of our Graphic Novel club, where monthly, we will invite folks into our Ninth Street Durham location to discuss a graphic novel or trade paper back collection at length and in person. The first selection is Kickback by V for Vendetta co-creator David Lloyd. We will also be announcing a new partnership with a local business where will be having a movie night with comic book themes. We will also announce a very exciting rotating signing schedule with one of the bigger comic book companies.
While what we are doing may not be as exciting as what some of the shops across the country are doing on the day of FCBD, we feel that the excitement we will generate towards the future happenings at our stores is just as valuable to us as the one day sale to the person we are likely not to see until next year.

Top Cow sent out a release on their Free Comic Book Day offering, as well as where you can find various Top Cow creators:
Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced its plans today for this weekend’s Free Comic Book Day, Saturday, May 2nd which takes place in comic shops across North America. Free Comic Book Day is an annual event where participating direct market stores give out free comics to anyone that walks into their store.
Top Cow is participating again in the event with their Free Comic Book Day offering, Cyberforce/Hunter-Killer First Look. The issue serves as an introduction to the publisher’s summer event of the same name, which brings together the two popular teams Cyberforce and Hunter-Killer. The series and Free Comic Book Day offering is written by Mark Waid (Amazing Spider-Man, Irredeemable) and drawn by Kenneth Rocafort (Astonishing Tales, Madame Mirage). Both teams were co-created by Top Cow founder Marc Silvestri and Hunter-Killer was co-created by writer Mark Waid. The teams have been absent from a regular series for several years and this marks their return to the forefront of the Top Cow Universe.
Writer Mark Waid will be appearing at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka, CA and artist Kenneth Rocafort will be appearing at the Puerto Rico Comic Con in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
