Marvel.com announces that the classic fighting game Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network. Check out the trailer above.
Pardon me for not knowing the answer in advance, but what’s the deal with that game anyway? I had it for the longest time, and I took it to one of those trade-in places and they gave me fifty bucks for it. The thing was years old–I mean it worked, it was fun the way it’s supposed to be fun, but why the hell is it such a big deal?
yeah seconded, Wraith. i didn’t know MvC2 was old school!!! my old school is NES… and even that is new school for classic arcade gamers!
Tucker, the deal is two things: 1. it’s got a massive cast of well known characters… probably the most comprehensive cast of any licensed property 2D fighting game out there (we’re taking, what… almost 30 Marvel characters, right? and that’s only one half of the cast). 2. it came at the tail-end of the 2D fighting game craze, it was the last of the Marvel / Capcom collabos, and it was built on a popular game engine that allowed people familiar with all sorts of different Capcom fighting games to get in on the action.
honestly, i love the Marvel / Capcom games (probably a bit too much…), but i actually think that MvC2 is the weakest link. it may have lots of characters, but it doesn’t have the game play of the earlier editions. in fact, MvC1 is probably the perfect 2D Capcom fighter, IMO. now THAT game should be re-released in HD remix style for sure. i love to play it (and i do play it, like every night), but it’s all pixelated and grainy on my TV at home now.

Marvel vs. Capcom is “old school?” I think not.
If it has more than 8 bits, it ain’t “old school.”
