Oh, man, Xtremes. I shopped there whenever I could as a teenager... which wasn't often, because they were pricey and located in the out-of-the-way Tanglewood Mall. They were one of the first coast-style comic shops in the area, also selling a lot of pop culture items. Most other shops in the area were very traditional comics-only or hobby shop type of stores at the time, and we lost the comics-only shops first when the bubble burst.

I suspect their closing has as much to do with Tanglewood's tremendous decline over the past few years. It was an older mall to begin with but gradually lost traffic to a newer mall opened in a newer section of town. It didn't lower rents, though, and over the past five years you've seen a ridiculous amount of chain store pull-out from the location.

I'm not totally sure about this but I think the loss of Xtremes means the city of Roanoke no longer has a comic shop. Star City Comics became Star City Games about a decade ago, focusing on CCGs, and seems to have been able to stay in business better for it. I think if you drive from Roanoke for an hour in any direction, you will only find used comics being sold in flea markets or new comics being sold as a sideline in gaming shops that exist to serve college campus communities.

"Littens are fair game!"

Yup. They taste like licken.

I admit to being genuinely intrigued by Mouse Guard. Based on the amount of articles I see written about it I'm finding myself wanting to check it out. But where to begin?

"Eighty-seven-year-old Joseph Deschenes may be the world’s only biggest fan of Rex Morgan, M.D. "

Sure, make fun of the elderly. Puppies and littens next? ;)
