Flash: Rebirth #3 variant

DC Comics announced yesterday on The Source blog that Flash: Rebirth by Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver will run six issues now, versus five. They also shared some info on the fifth issue:

In issue #5, which will be solicited in the June Previews, the greatest threat to face the Flash Family in decades stands revealed. Plus, a new hero will take on an older speedster’s role. And Barry Allen faces having to once again sacrifice his life to save all that he holds dear.

They don't mention a reason why the mini-series was extended, but maybe someone will ask about it in the next Geoff Johns Prime on CBR ...

Hopefully this is giving the book more room for development because so far, it's not doing it for me. Don't get me wrong, I love VanSciver and Johns' work and I really hope that the story starts wowing me soon. Awesome artwork though.

I get my books at the end of the month from DCBS, so I had a chance to read a lot of the reviews for Flash: Rebirth #1, most of them either negative or non-commital. Having had the chance to read it myself now, I can't say I agree. I thought is was very good. It built a nice foundation for the character, briefly touched on his influence and legacy within the DCU and re-established the very important friendship with Hal Jordan, all while introducing a compelling mystery and a new wrinkle/motivation for Barry from his past.

I think Johns is being very careful and I feel his presentation of Barry as a person back from dead who doesn't know why is set up specifically to speak to readers' concerns along those same lines. Again, it feels like a foundation from which Johns will build his world and his purpose and convert skeptics.

The artwork was EVS, take it or leave it. He's not my favorite, but he is good. I'm hoping we get Ivan Reis for the monthly, myself.

All in all, a very good beginning, in my opinion. No, it didn't necessarily take off running (so to speak), but I expect it will pick up considerable steam in future issues and when all is said and done, the completed story will be all the better for having taken its time to establish the status quo properly. If an additional issue allows them to more fully flesh everything out, that's all the better.

I'm pretty sure when Flash: Rebirth was first announced, it was announced as a 6 issue mini. But when it was later solicited it was down to 5.
