Who’s behind the mask this time?

Batgirl #1

Batgirl #1

DC’s The Source blog has posted a Batgirl teaser image that’s got fans talking in their comments section. Who exactly is that behind the mask?

Barbara Gordon and Cassandra Cain seem to be the obvious and popular guesses, with Betty Kane, Misfit, Spoiler and Wendy — Calculator’s daughter — also making a showing. The other mystery seems to be who drew it; as many folks note in the comments, it is a nice piece.

Batgirl #1 is due in August.

Kinda looks like Nicola Scott’s work to me.

adam hughes?

Can’t be Adam Hughes, her rack is too small :)

Stephane Roux? But the coloring remind me of the Oracle mini which is drawn by Fernando Pasarin and Julian Lopez.

I`ll bet it`s Barbara…now that Kara, Hal and Barry are back it`s just a matter of time for they to bring back Barbara into the costume….heck, even Krypto came back!

Great to see DC still knows how to fill out a perfect boob shot.

hey, based on how it looks … does that mean it is stitched to her face… ick

Nicola Scott? Hardly. That’s AH as the day is long.

Too small? Those scream backache to me… ;)

I’m wondering if the artist is Ryan Sook.

Not happy that they’re apparently keeping the ugly bondage mask stitching. It doesn’t really matter to me who it is, as long as it’s not mute-ninja Batgirl or Spoiler.

Either Stephane Roux or JG Jones. Jones is doing variants for all the bat-books this summer.

I think its Cassandra Cain. After the mini series, she kind of disappeared. She’s not even on the outsiders anymore.

Probably Barbara given the timing with Dick presumably becoming Batman. Now they can have a sort of Mr. and Mrs. Batman thing going on.

I think it’s Babs…the “stitching” on her face is going to be some neural interface that lets her walk again or some such. (which is silly, but not quite as silly as having non-neural stitching on your face).

I’m thinking it’s JG Jones and Barbara Gordon, but those are both just guesses. Here’s what’s interesting to me, though:

If DC does bring Babs back as Batgirl, just imagine how much more interesting she is now, as a character, than she ever was back in the “I’ll dress like Batman to fool my dad” days before Alan Moore’s Joker put her in the chair. We’ve had a couple of decades of great Oracle stories, first in Suicide Squad, then Birds of Prey and elsewhere, to show us what Barbara is capable of, even without the use of her legs. The writers have even been pretty good about showing her combat skills, despite the handicap. But mostly what we’ve seen is just how smart this young woman really is!

My dream scenario (similar to what Ap0k wrote above) would be that she’s back in action, but only through the use of some sort of technology, preferably with only limited use of full mobility. I’d hate to see DC completely “de-paralyze” her, only because I think it’s a good thing to have positive role models in the comics that deal constructively with limitations that some portion of the readership may also be coping with.

Looks like JG Jones to me, and that is clearly NOT Barbara Gordon. It’s either Stephanie or Cassandra.

I REALLY want it to be Cassandra, but y’know, non-white person in Gotham is a no-no, so … Steph is my guess.

I believe that costume is Cassandra’s. The empty bat and all. Cass had her mouth covered with fabric that was stiched on, so I think the stiching is just the remnants of that.

Hope it is cass too.

That looks like the Dodsons to me.

well the costume was made by Huntress, then Bats kicked her out and gave the costume to Cass.

anyways I desperately want it to be Cass, but theres no way she could be doing that pose or smiling like that.

just to be different I’m gonna say Misfit >_>

“Not happy that they’re apparently keeping the ugly bondage mask stitching.”

This.

Also, I’ll bet $100 that it’s Misfit. Not that this would be a good idea (it wouldn’t), but it sounds like something the current management would do.

kinda feels like PETE WOODS…

Looks like a phil noto. Its got the Noto-ish lips and nose, and someone else inks and colors..

Darn, I was really hoping there was going to be a new Batgirl costume, hopefully designed by Alex Ross; this one is just so meh.

(oh, and I think it’s Babs.)

Squire?

Yes, I have been saying that Squire will be the new Batgirl for weeks!! Especially since the story where Tim remarks about how well they work together and seem to almost read each others mind. I read that as the groundwork for those two to have a relationship and have her as the new Batgirl. I don’t think that is AH! though, Hughes’ girls always seem to have a glow about them, this is pretty straight up.

Ya the mask is simply the Cassandra’s mask with the face part taken off, not stitched to her face. It’s too sexy a pose for Misfit I think. I hope it’s still Cass. Could be Barbara (boo!) or Stephanie too.

Poss it’s the Dodsons drawing but didn’t they jump to Marvel?

The stitching makes me think of the “Batman Returns” Catwoman. Could this possibly be a temporary new gig for Selina Kyle?

definitely Adam Hughes. I thought Sook as a secondary possibility, but Sook’s got a stock female face which also tends to be flatter.

Looking at the facial feature of the chin the character does not look like a redhead nor a blonde. The nose is japanese looking and the skin tone and shape of the face looks East Asian to me. Cassanda Cain is the most likely canidate IMO.

Why does it have to be a female in the costume?

Come to think of it……that does look like Bruce.

Agree with Double C on Pete Woods, and most likely Cassandra Cain due to skin color and costume.

There is absolutely no chance that’s Adam Hughes. Trust me. There’s too many reasons to even list if you’re a true stalker of AH!

I would go so far as to say it is the Dodsons….AND the same colorist (if they don’t do their own coloring) that they use for Uncanny X-men.

iS IT JUST ME OR DOES IT LOOK LIKE HER MASK IT SOWN TO HER FACE?

Who said ‘why does it have to be a woman?’
Men aren’t woman. If you study them for art and TRY to talk to them you know that.

I’d have gone with Terry Dodson as my pick for artist. The colouring and highlighting has certainly got a Rachel Dodson flavour about it and I don’t think Terry knows how to draw small boobs.

My first thoughts on the stitched down mask were of “Batman Returns” Catwoman. Yeah. Selina Kyle donning a “bat” uniform? I’m just throwing it out there!

It looks to me that the lips-nose-chin part is a mask stitched to Cassandra’s full facemask not a cowl stitched to the face. Kinda like the “do you see the old hag or the young girl” optical illusion.

Mitch Gerard, just OOC, why?

There is NO way that is JG Jones art work, it’s not good enough to be JG. With those stitches in the face my bet is that is none other than RAGDOLL!!

Yikes. That colorist is terrible. It’s a complete 5 min hack job. And if it’s he or she that did the spotting? Double bad, since the shading is all over the place. The lines would be lovely otherwise.

As for speculation? No way to tell based on the art. Cass alone has been drawn 50 million ways from extreme asian, to extreme white girl. I do so want it to be her, but not holding my breath.

I don’t think it’s Cass. She doesn’t have a sexy asian nose.
Unless the artist just failed to portray her ethnic features.

I hope its cassandra, let barbara stay where shes actually useful as oracle. To have stephanie take over as batgirl would be cruel since shes the only friend cassandra had. Cassandra has a lot of potential, comics fans just need to realize that not every hero has to be the cooky cutter hero like the robins, the fact that cassandra can still grow as a character should be interesting to you people not a turn off.
But that is definetly adam hughes work.

poor DC fans, that is clearly Wolverine, the pouty lips just totally give it away.

As much as I want to see Babs about kicking ass, I’m not sure she qualifies as “girl” anymore.

Yeah, I have to say, it’s probably Wolverine.

Is everyone so quick to forget that before the BAtman TV show, Bette Kane was the original Batgirl (written Bat-Girl, I think). Now that we have a Kathy (sorry, Kate) Kane as Batwoman again, is it that much of a stretch for Bette to be Batgirl? Especially since her codename’s been stolen by a Kryptonian.

It’s clearly not Adam Hughes, but it is definitely an artist who wants to BE Adam Hughes.
I don’t think it’s Ryan Sook, who tends to spot more blacks in his arwork.
It’s not Terry Dodson, because it’s not a “Dodson face” (and isn’t he Marvel exclusive anyway?)
It’s clearly not J.G. Jones or Phil Noto, like someone suggested.
I’m not that familiar with Pete Woods, but I don’t think it’s him either.
I’m leaning towards Stephane Roux or Nicola Scott.

As for who’s the new/old Batgirl, unless it’s Yvonne Craig, I couldn’t care less.

I’m with Graeme. There’s already been mention of Kathy and Bette being aunt and niece again (“I’ll call Aunt Kathy and see what’s up in Gotham”), Flamebird is taken, and in the future Titans stories, she’s Batwoman. Kathy’s hair color was changed from brunette to give us our “hot redhead in Batsuit” fix, and the idea of the older Babs being -Girl to Kathy’s -Woman is kind of silly.

The mask isn’t stitched onto her face. It’s Cassandra’s costume, which had stitching on the mouthpiece portion. Here, that portion has been ripped out in an untidy manner, leaving stitching behind. It’s not that clearly conveyed because the artist should have made the free stitches look more frayed and wayward.

It saddens me that it’s probably not Cassandra. The mouth cover of the cowl was always very symbolic of Cass, who had difficulties interacting with people due to her violent upbringing and speech impediment. The fact that the mouthpiece has been torn out is highly suggestive of Batgirl no longer being Cass. There goes more of the racial diversity in the DCU. Looks like Gotham (and most of the DCU for that matter) is back to being for white people only.

That being said, it’s most likely Babs. She’s supposedly gonna get the use of her legs back in The Cure. That makes it a double disappointment for me, because I loved her role and character as the Oracle. I wish there was some way she could get over her disability while still remaining Oracle, because she’s done more to help people in that role than as Batgirl.

And if she is Batgirl again, am I the only one seeing something inherently wrong in Babs being BatGIRL, while some other person is going around as BatWOMAN? Doesn’t make sense.

While I’m not picking this title up unless Cass gets treated properly, I will say that the artist who made the teaser is very good.

Something screams Selina Kyle to me.

I’m going with Jason Todd. He’s been Batman, Robin, Red Robin, Red Hood and Nightwing already. It’s time for him to expand his horizons and try out another new Batman related costume. Hush can give hima few cosmetic make overs and, bam, we have our new Batgirl.

I think it’s Bruce Wayne

I’m going to agree with Horace…
It doesn’t have to be a woman.
It could very well be the man-boobed Meatloaf from Fight Club.

And, yeah, there’s a direct reference there that I’m not going to mention…

But, seriously…
Squire seems like a good guess to me.

I suppose it’s possible. Stranger things have happened.

I think it may be Stephanie Brown

Because the stitching could suggest another one of her homemade costumes like the ‘Robin’ one she made….So I hope it is Steph.

or … Duela Dent may return and Be Batgirls daughter, lol.

it couldn’t be stephanie brown unless someone revived her. she was killed when she was the spoiler by the black mask.
