Chip Kidd to write Batman comic [Updated]

Chip Kidd
Designer, author and Dark Knight enthusiast Chip Kidd has revealed he'll write a full-length Batman story for DC Comics.
The announcement came over the weekend during the Printers Row Lit Festival in Chicago.
Kidd confirmed the news via Twitter, but told CBR this afternoon that it's "far too premature for any 'official' announcement."
"I am excited beyond measure about it, and there is a signed contract, but beyond that I just don’t want to say anything about it yet," he said. "Believe me, when it’s a more appropriate time, you won’t be able to shut me up about it. I assure you."
Kidd, the associate art director of Knopf, has a long fascination with the Caped Crusader, dating back to his childhood. In 1996, he released Batman Collected, a coffee-table book devoted to Batman memorabilia (including his own). Last year he compiled and designed Bat-Manga! The Secret History of Batman in Japan, which showcased Jiro Kuwata's 1966-67 manga series as well as photographs of vintage Japanese toys.
Kidd also designed the trade dress for DC's Final Crisis, Trinity and the All-Star line, and collaborated with Alex Ross on Mythology: The DC Comics Art of Alex Ross and with Paul Dini on Batman Animated.

Wow. I'm really interested in this. Aside from the Trinity covers which were a hideous crime against graphic design, he's such a talented Graphic designer and he is so funny in person. I can't wait.

So, I assume it will be an original graphic novel and not a series.
Artist suggestions anyone? anyone?
I haven't seen new Walter Simonson art in a long time. I think it's time to see his Batman again.

You mean the Final Crisis covers, yeah?
Don't think Kidd had anything to do with Trinity.

Kidd devised the "revolving" logos treatment for Trinity

I liked the Cover Design for the Final Crisis covers.

Um, who cares if a designer who made awful logos for DC writes a comic book? What writing credentials does he have? He wrote a book about memorabilia I guess that's enough for DC. There are so many up and coming writers and artists who would kill to work on a comic yet someone who has a moderate amount of fame gets the job.

He has also published at least one novel.

Kidd is more than just a designer. Beyond the memorabilia books, he's also written two prose novels that have been well received. I've only read one, but it was an excellent read.
I really enjoy the man's work, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with this book.

J. Jonah:
Ah, if only Simonson would draw this or anything else. Or, if only he would write and draw something. As a writer, he's okay, but when he writes and draws something, it's dynamite.

I'm terribly petty for saying that, but here it goes: I hope he isn't credited on the cover.
Best,

He also wrote an excellent Batman short story (art by Tony Millionaire) in DC's Bizarro collection a few years back. So yeah, he's pretty much a proven talent with an appreciation for the character.

He obviously has affection for the character, is an established writer (though not in the comic form), but his enthusiasm is very apparent. I'll definitely look forward to whatever he produces.

Has he even started writing the story? I'd much rather hear - and get excited about - Chip Kidd writing a Batman story coming out NEXT WEDNESDAY. Not IN THE FUTURE. It could be due in the next five to ten years.

I hope he'll feature famous Batman toys in the comic. Captain Action!

His designs are truly horrible. Those Trinity logos are some of the worst I have ever seen. He is such an overhyped designer it is amazing. His designs are as bad as Turner's anatomy. Good job, DC- Give more work to an awful creator.

The curmudgeons who say things like "terrible designer" and "overhyped" must not have seen Batman: Animated or Bat-Manga. Those are beautiful books.

he wrote two books but they suck. he is a good designer, but he often relies on obvious tricks to get emotional responses (nostalgia, etc). he also reminds me of a goofy frankenstein.

And Hunter wins the comments thread.

I agree with this. Remember the announcement about Adam Hughes' Wonder Woman series? Or that X-Men graphic novel written by Claremont and drawn by Milo Manara? I'd sure like to buy those books that were announced years ago.
