Thank you for this thoughtful, lovely paean to Mazzuchelli's sorely underrated Rubber Blanket. With Astorios Polyp now in bookstores and securing rave reviews far and wide, a reassesment of this seminal work in Mazzuchelli's career was due. How wonderful to see his incredible artwork again, his pen reminiscent of Alex Toth yet considerably more abstract, expressionistic. "Big Man" I always thought one of the finest short comic stories and certainly a high-water mark for Mazzuchelli.

Asterios Polyp truly is a wonderful graphic novel. Mr. Mazzucchelli will be discussing it and his exhibition “Sounds and Pauses: The Comics of David Mazzucchelli” with curator and PictureBox publisher Dan Nadel on Thursday July 16th at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art.

David is also scheduled to appear at Bryant Park on August 19th with Heidi and Danny Fingeroth, Chip Kidd and more!

It was a great pleasure to put together the show with David and Dan and I hope everyone will have a chance to come see it!

Those three issues of Rubber Blanket and City of Glass (along with Born Again & Year One) all reside in places of honor on my bookshelves along with books like From Hell and Lost Girls and the works of Paul Pope, Scott Morse, and Chris Ware. RB is essential, and I can't wait to get my copy of Asterios Polyp and dive into that.

Thanks for the profile on such an important book.

Years ago I asked someone at Pantheon about a RUBBER BLANKET collection, and the response I got was that David Mazzucchelli was the one keeping it from being collected in English. If I remember correctly, Mazzucchelli was already working on POLYP and didn't want older material showing up in the meantime. Maybe now that POLYP is done we might get a collection? Hopefully? Until then, I shall continue to treasure my copies of all three issues!

(For those who can read French, there were a couple of the stories from RUBBER BLANKET reprinted as stand alone graphic novels that way.)

Me, I hope that Mazzucchelli is inspired to do more work after Asterios Polyp is published. It would be nice to see Rubber Blanket collected, but the Mazz is a true genius and we'd be lucky to see him publish more graphic novels (or return to the monthly world - but that will never happen).

Mazzucchelli's contribution to LEGEND OF ARZACH was just one poster in a portfolio, surely?
