Straight for the art | Mark Waid on the perfect cover
Comics writer and BOOM! Editor-in-Chief Mark Waid tells us why Paul Rivoche’s cover for The Spirit #29 is “hands down, the best cover I’ve seen on a comic for a while, maybe all year.” It’s an interesting post about what makes a cover work, from the storytelling elements to the color choices.

As good as the cover is, the story inside is the best Spirit story since Cooke left. Good characterization (especially the Spirit himself) and very Eisneresque in that the meat of the story doesn’t involve the Spirit himself, but is about three other people. Very well done, all around. It’s a shame they finally got someone who understands the character just when the book was cancelled.

Dean Motter wrote that issue, didn’t he? I’ll have to look for it the next time I’m at the comic shop.

I almost didn’t but this issue, as the lustre is gone. Glad I got it. Was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the issue, and loved the ending.

I particularly liked the poetic-ness of the ending.
