Rotc cadets come out as lieutenants(and lieutenants is the bottom of the officer rank structure), and outside of a few prima donnas who insist that officer makes one superior to non-officers, lieutenants are treated as idiots by 90 percent of the military. They don’t know anything, they have zero real world experience, are ridiculed by non-rates and officers alike. Nobody comes out of the academy as anything other than something that needs a lot of polishing. (Being petty but it’s what I always find funny about pilot movies, there are no lieutenants on the planet that can outfly a Captain or a Major any pilot under 25 years old will never outfly a 35 year old)

what is the difference between a lieutenant and a private first class? a PFC has been promoted once. Old joke, but it gives you an idea of the respect that a lieutenant has from the rest of the military.

Magiblack – Think of Starfleet Academy as the ROTC. ROTC cadets come out of school/college with ranks before entering full service. So these characters already having reached Lt., etc., isn’t much of a stretch.

good movie, don’t care too much about continuity, but I do have a small issue with how people took over positions, it seems like Starfleet doesn’t have a real chain of command. I can’t imagine a universe in which a fresh graduate (or non-graduate) would ever take over the captaincy

as to the post, I was stationed in Tustin for several years, I wonder which hangar they used?

Man, I loved that film. I haven’t gone out and seen one in quite a while, and having seen all the Trek films, I couldn’t believe how much I liked it.

“Canon” is spelled with one N, unless you’re referring to the weapon.

you know, there’s a possibility (small, I know) that the scene where Pike transfers command over to Kirk doesn’t come directly after the main action in the movie chronologically . . . . .

I tried to listed very closely to the dialogue and cues (but I could very well be lunching), but I thought that though the audience was led to believe only a short span of time passed — it’s possible that Kirk had a few other adventures and career-making points before returning and gaining the Enterprise (?)

Kirk getting the command didn’t bother me at all. All the other crew members of the enterprise got their posts right away. Uhura was a Lt. right from a cadet, plus Pike promoted him.

The movie created its own Trek timeline, anything is possible now…even Kirk getting command of a starship right out of school!

I was never really concerned about Kirk not serving on the Farragut, but more with the fact that he’s made a captain of a star ship, full time, without even graduating from the Academy. That’s just a little too crazy for this Trekkie, but it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the movie.

Major changes in continuity?? Please! Even Trek canon has so many contradicitions that even canonites can’t keep it all straight. I started watching Trek in 1969. I’ve loved all of them. But it was time for a major kick in the a**. Trek was near death, Enterprise and Nemesis saw to that. Trek wasn’t “cool” nor would it ever be again. It was so top heavy with history that it was intimidating to newbies.

J.J. did the right thing, the new Trek is fun again. While I know that some hide bound Cannonist are up in arms, they need to relax. The horror, Kirk gets promoted to the Enterprise before serving on the Farragat. Tell me how the change in the back story effects ANYTHING. The one episode that it directly effects, Obssesion, can still happen, Kirk didn’t need to have served on the Farragat for that tale to be told.

Enjoy the ride, Trek is cool again, and it’s positive message is still in place.

Great story, it was a fantastic read.

But…steady decline of Deep Space Nine? I think not!
