I despise snobbery of any form, especially when it comes from the comic book world. Why the us vs. them mentality? It’s exactly this kind of antiquated thinking that will always put retailers behind the curve even as taste, culture, and technology evolves beyond them. Any good business person will tell you, you don’t “react” to market trends, you must “anticipate” them.

Hey Carroll,

We need to figure out how to fix the traditional way of selling comics, no? I don’t know how many times I’ve stepped into a comic store and they’ve “sold out” of a book because they couldn’t risk ordering more. The retailer landscape has to change if stores are to survive, and the answer is introducing comics to new readers to bring in more traffic. At least Tyrese (and other celebrity-driven comics) are bringing comics to the attention of non-traditional readers. I think we can all support that, right?

Even with all of the exposure the comic industry has with movies and tv, it’s amazing that a new property from a major celebrity and image comics is only expected to sell 3 copies per shop. How do these retailers expect to stay in business? If I owned a shop I would want to ride in the wake of Tyrese’s hard work and order a few more copies. I can’t think of the last time a new book got this kind of exposure.

And who knows? It might even be good. The art looks great!

I commend him for taking the time to call these stores up himself. We all know he’s not a comic book veteran, but who cares. He’s passionate about it and has great people on his creative team.

No one is saying it’s OK to just sell 3 copies…but when you’re ordering from a non-returnable distributor, most comic stores aren’t going take a chance (especially when the comic looks like a hold-over from 1996). The distribution model for direct market stores does not invite “taking chances” on new books.

I don’t see anything wrong with someone trying to sell more comics. I think it’s a negative self-fulling prophecy when stores think it’s okay to just sell 3 copies of any title.

He’s crazy if he thinks any store beyond the big cities is going to order more than a handful…if even that. If I was still doing orders, I’d order 3 max and I’d be willing to bet they wouldn’t sell out.
