Cornell and Raney to tackle Black Widow: Deadly Origin [Updated]
- Posted on July 17, 2009 - 09:58 AM by Kevin Melrose
It's starting to feel as if Comic-Con is starting early this year.
On the heels of yesterday's announcement of the Punisher MAX relaunch, Marvel reveals Paul Cornell and Tom Raney will team up in November for Black Widow: Deadly Origin.
Cornell tells Geoff Boucher of The Los Angeles Times the four-issue miniseries will present the Soviet super-spy turned superhero as "the most experienced intelligence agent in the world."
It's no coincidence, of course, that Black Widow will play a role in next year's Iron Man movie sequel, in which she'll be portrayed by Scarlett Johansson.
Black Widow: Deadly Origin is Cornell's follow-up to the canceled Captain Britain and MI13. Raney most recently worked on the Dark Reign: Hawkeye miniseries.
Update: The LA Times originally referred to the miniseries as Black Widow: Year One. The actual title apparently is Black Widow: Deadly Origin.

Great news. In his relatively short tenure on Captain Britain, Cornell has quickly become one of my favorite writers. I'd probably pick this up regardless, but the fact that it's Black Widow really plays to Cornell's strengths.

Ack! Sorry, I meant for *throws down dollars* to be in the previous comment, but I put it in greater-than and less-than symbols and it thought it was an HTML tag.

There's big shoes to fill here. Richard K. Morgan's two Black Widow mini series which began in 2004 were among the best comics I've read this decade. I truly hope Cornell doesn't retcon the retelling of Natasha's origin which Morgan established, which fit beautifully with Natasha's past and present.

Man, DC, how many Year One stories are you going to do before they get old?
Wait, what?

So lets get this straight:
The mini-series Natasha passing on a deadly tecnho virus to every man she ever kissed.
So, essentially, the plot is about the Black Widow spreading VD throughout the Marvel universe.
How wonderfully progressive! I'm can't wait to read about Hawkeye's problem with genital warts and Tony Stark recovering from the clap.
Between this and Marvel Divas, Marvel is sure boosting their mysoginistic bona fides lately.
