Just in time for winter, Marvel to publish Winter Guard this December

Winter Guard

Winter Guard

Marvel has started to tease some of their December comics over on their website, starting with the Hulk titles. One of those titles features the Winter Guard, who appeared recently in the Hulk.

I remember them, though, as the Soviet Super Soldiers, who first appeared back in the early 1980s when the Hulk was roaming the world and meeting all sorts of new heroes, as chronicled by Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema. At the time, the team included Darkstar, her brother Vanguard, Ursa Major and Crimson Dynamo. The new team consists of Darkstar, Red Guardian, Crimson Dynamo and Major Ursa, but I think the Darkstar and Red Guardian identities have been assumed by new folks. I’m sure David Gallaher and Steve Ellis, the team behind High Moon and this new one-shot, will fill us in in December.

The Darkstar in this series is called ‘Sasha’. A Darkstar appeared out of nowhere during Jeff Loeb’s ‘Hulk’ series, probably because he hadn’t realised that she was meant to be dead, so they changed the hair colour and said that now Darkstar has become a legacy title (which they’ve done loads of times before with Red Guardian and Crimson Dynamo). But where’s Vanguard!?!?!

>> The Darkstar in this series is called ‘Sasha’. >>

Yup. It’s referred to in a recent issue of She-Hulk.

>> But where’s Vanguard!?!?! >>

Good question.

Foreign characters on super-hero universes are usually just crossover canon fodder, just look at Alpha Flight.

Even if that issue is good, its only function will be to remember the Bendises out there that there is a super-hero team they can massacre without worrying about hurting reader sensibilities. After all, they are just a bunch of non-american characters, aren’t they?

I used to wish there was a cool european super-hero team on the Marvel universe. Now I’m thankful there isn’t. Modern super-hero comics have made me a bitter man…

Hunter (Pedro Bouça)

I love the international teams.

I think DC has used them to great effect in crossovers since 52.

It’s awesome to see Marvel give the spotlight to one.
