Send Us Your Shelf Porn!
- Posted on September 23, 2009 - 02:00 PM by Chris Mautner

Time once again for Send Us Your Shelf Porn, the only Internet blog post (that I know of) that lets you, the reader, be the nerd king (or queen, or regent) for a day. This week we're featuring the collection of Jeff Keller from New Berlin, Wisconsin, whose got quite the set-up in his basement.
Remember, Shelf Porn can only continue with your help. Got a collection you'd like to share? Let the world see it by emailing photos and commentary to me at cmautnerATcomcastDOTnet.
And how here's Jeff:
First of all, thank you for this great forum. I’ve always been curious how other people display their collections, and you have provided a chance for all of us to share our inner sanctums. I have collected comics for most of my life, and honored to open mine up to all. I hope you enjoy the tour, and I would like to hear what you think.

In my basement room, I wanted people to walk in and be able to peruse the various displays just as you would the aisles of your local comic shop. You’ll find a cross-section of old and new, with the emphasis on DC Comic characters (heavily Batman oriented) and related memorabilia. A large part of my collection is in trade paperbacks of comic strips, dating back to the early 70’s

Lots of comic strip trade paperbacks dating back to the early 70’s

The Overstreet Price Guides start at 1974!

Check out the McDonalds menu board (circa 1974) Quarter Pounder with Cheese for $1.00!

The metal “Best Comics Reading” DC Comics sign came from the spinner rack from the local drug store where I bought comics for 15 years as a kid.

This spinner rack contains one of every DC title from the “Go-Go Checks” era of 1966-67. After over 40 years of collecting, I am “specializing” a little. I am currently compiling a complete collection of every “Go-Go Checks” cover, and I am about 80% complete!

The lateral file cabinets provide a neater storage alternative from the traditional white boxes. Each cabinet holds about 2400 comics.

In addition to the Go-Go Checks, I have also compiled a complete collection of DC 100 Page issues, as well as all of the Bicentennial covers from 1976.

The Toy Corner. A mix of old and new.

Thanks!

Also love that file cabinet solution. Getting my spare room custom-shelved floor to ceiling next summer and think I might put these in for the bottom shelf all around.

That is an amazing collection, it really is a comic shop every day. Props for the Bob Hope comic, but isn't your ice cream going to melt sitting on the cabinet ... regardless ..A+.

That looks awesome, lots of history there. The Green Hornet display is interesting especially the two figures. If you're interested, Enterbay just released a deluxe 12" figure of Bruce Lee as Green Hornet. Its pretty expensive at around $180 to lower $200 USD but a definitely worth tracking down.

What an incredible collection! I admire the presentation! I love buying action figures but can't seem to ever leave them in the packages. Your set up for displaying them in their packs though makes me wish I went this route instead. There's so much neat stuff in this room! I like the unique items like the Batman and Robin pennant and the Snoopy phone! The filing cabinets for comic storage is something I may have to attempt myself in the future. Thanks for sharing your collection, Jeff!

the one thing i'm jealous of is the shazam edition of the "30s to 70s" series. i have the superman and batman ones (although not in such nice shape, i got mine when i was 6 or 7) but only recently have learned that the shazam one even existed. would love to get my grubby hands on one.

Hi there!
Love the room! Am now inspired. Can you give me the dimensions on the lateral cabinets? I need something to put over 5,000 comics and that looks great! What's more, my wife agrees and we will go shopping for them.
Best,
LJ

The dimensions of the cabinets are 53" high, 36" wide and 18" deep.
The picture of Superman and Lois Lane is signed by Phyllis Coates only. I had a chance to meet her at the Chicago Wizard Con a few years back. She was very talkative and seemingly enjoyed being there.
I found the Shazam 30's to the 70's hardcover on eBay about 10 years agao. I paid $100 for it then. The Superman and Batman editions were purchased new when they came out in 1974 or so.

Man, that looks just awesome! My collection is definitely overgrowing it's current confines. Have always wanted to build a small shop to put my collectibles in. Saving up for that now. Hope it turns out half as good as your basement. Great job!

I think it's great that people can enjoy their hobby to the dgeree that Jeff does. But while it's interesteting to look at his collection and set up, I have found that it is not something which I aspire. Whether it be comic books, baseball cards, movie memorabilia, war mementoes, it ultimately is just stuff. I am currently pricing my 22 long boxes of comics to sell them. The collection dates back to the 60s and there are so many issues about which that I remember nothing. They were important ot one time, but now they are just stuff.

Your absolutley right Jason. It is all just "stuff". Some of this stuff I have had since I was 8-10 years old & I'm 50 now. I never let this "stuff" get in the way of anything important in my life, it is just a diversion. I have an understanding wife and 2 kids who lovingly call me a "comic book geek", but they also respect the fact that this "stuff" never intrudes on their time with me, or mine with them. It's all about balance. Now, about those 22 long boxes. My email is jake1615@yahoo.com. Let me know more about this "stuff" you no longer want.

Fantastic! Great idea to use lateral files instead of long boxes.

Wow! that's a great idea for the Lateral File Cabinets! I'd love to do something similar myself. My only concern with Lateral Cabinets is that the Heighth of the Drawers might not be tall enough? That didn't seem to be a problem with your collection, but in looking at a few lateral file cabinets in stores or the ones we have at my workplace, that the Drawers aren't tall enough? What are the Brand Names of the Fling cabinets you used?

James,
The lateral cabinets work really well. CGC books do not fit standing up, however. The cabinets I have are "Hon" brand, which is a pretty well known manufacturer of office furniture. I found them on craigslist.
