Now, image having that same setup as a coffee/graphic book shop. Rent a small space w/a coffee cart out front or inside and sell comics/graphic books and stuff people use to make their basements look like graphic book shops... call it, 'GeekMart'...!

*You would think with ‘shelf porn’ article where we get to diplay our work that all comic shops would look like this -Now, I know the garage/basement feel that us ‘old-schoolers’ grew up with is quite nastalgic and filled with character, but this type of decor and arrangement is like a wine that has properly aged… Even places like Time Travelers in Detroit has totally upgraded its shelving, level of upkeep, organization which has a very simple, clean and more comfortable atmosphere that allows it to be very accessible to new customers… Also check out The Vault of Midnight in Ann Arbor, MI. The successful graphic book shops that are dedicated to this type of upkeep and setup of their shop’s space.

** This is a question for those of us who love collecting as well as ‘investing’.
When to sell?
If our economy is only going to be getting worse (WTO allows for US companies to outsource, and for other countries that do not have anti-trust laws to use the WTO for their own monopolies to subsidize and protect their new companies in the USA, -also Social Security as of 2015 will always be a liability for the US, and the next ten years gas prices will go up, and so will the US Federal Reserve’s interest rates creating inflation and further devaluing the value of our savings accounts, and everyone believes that the 2020′s will be the next depression -less than ten years away) so, -when are we supposed to have a market of people who will buy our collections?

If we ever recover from the next depression with the same type of culture we have now -who in this new post depression world will even be familiar enough with print (non-digital) media to want to buy a long box of comics? ***I had to liquidate my original collection trying to pay off debt, before I eventually declared bankruptcy, but I am interested in constructive feedback as I consider growing my new collections. Thank you.

James,

The lateral cabinets work really well. CGC books do not fit standing up, however. The cabinets I have are "Hon" brand, which is a pretty well known manufacturer of office furniture. I found them on craigslist.

Wow! that's a great idea for the Lateral File Cabinets! I'd love to do something similar myself. My only concern with Lateral Cabinets is that the Heighth of the Drawers might not be tall enough? That didn't seem to be a problem with your collection, but in looking at a few lateral file cabinets in stores or the ones we have at my workplace, that the Drawers aren't tall enough? What are the Brand Names of the Fling cabinets you used?

Your absolutley right Jason. It is all just "stuff". Some of this stuff I have had since I was 8-10 years old & I'm 50 now. I never let this "stuff" get in the way of anything important in my life, it is just a diversion. I have an understanding wife and 2 kids who lovingly call me a "comic book geek", but they also respect the fact that this "stuff" never intrudes on their time with me, or mine with them. It's all about balance. Now, about those 22 long boxes. My email is jake1615@yahoo.com. Let me know more about this "stuff" you no longer want.

I think it's great that people can enjoy their hobby to the dgeree that Jeff does. But while it's interesteting to look at his collection and set up, I have found that it is not something which I aspire. Whether it be comic books, baseball cards, movie memorabilia, war mementoes, it ultimately is just stuff. I am currently pricing my 22 long boxes of comics to sell them. The collection dates back to the 60s and there are so many issues about which that I remember nothing. They were important ot one time, but now they are just stuff.

Man, that looks just awesome! My collection is definitely overgrowing it's current confines. Have always wanted to build a small shop to put my collectibles in. Saving up for that now. Hope it turns out half as good as your basement. Great job!

The dimensions of the cabinets are 53" high, 36" wide and 18" deep.

The picture of Superman and Lois Lane is signed by Phyllis Coates only. I had a chance to meet her at the Chicago Wizard Con a few years back. She was very talkative and seemingly enjoyed being there.

I found the Shazam 30's to the 70's hardcover on eBay about 10 years agao. I paid $100 for it then. The Superman and Batman editions were purchased new when they came out in 1974 or so.
