Okay, because it looks like there is some Hiragana and some Katakana used on that, and it was basically gibberish.
And I know nothing of Dial H for Hero, so that didn’t help my confusion at all.

Joe–it’s not Japanese. The “artifact” is Robby Reed’s H-Dial. According to the ever-changing and questionable Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dial_H_for_Hero), “In issue #9 of the current volume of The Brave and the Bold, Robby reveals to Tin of the Metal Men that the symbols are Interlac, suggesting at least some relevance between the later 31st Century of the Legion of Super-Heroes and the Dial’s construction.” (Interlac being the “designated communication language of the 30th century United Planets” Wikipedia again [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlac])

I’m confused by the Japanese gibberish on that artifact on the Brave and the Bold cover. Does that have any significance in the story? Is that item on the cover actually supposed to be Japanese? Since I’ve started learning Japanese, this has become a pet peeve of mine.

Agreed. I picked up the single on a whim, maybe a year ago, and was just captivated by the genuine laughs in there.

Thus the largely dull, uninspired sequel was such a disappointment.
