Straight for the art | Sean Murphy’s Wolverine Alphabet (and more)

Sean Murphy's Wolverine ABCs

Sean Murphy's Wolverine ABCs

As we noted the other day, Vertigo has expanded the upcoming Grant Morrison/Sean Murphy series Joe the Barbarian from six issues to eight. Looking at Murphy’s deviantart account, it’s not hard to see why. Among the visual delights therein are letters A through H of a Wolverine Alphabet, featuring the Ol’ Canucklehead and friends kickin’ it Sesame Street style. (Unsurprisingly, the set has Marvel editors beating a path to the DC-exclusive artist’s door.)

The gallery also includes page after luscious page of Murphy’s work on Hellblazer, a few Joe the Barbarian preview pages, and random other goodies, from a recreation of the poster for Easy Rider starring Wolverine and Banshee in place of Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda to the below image of all of Murphy’s childhood heroes one one team. No wonder Vertigo veterans Paul Pope, Cameron Stewart, and Jock have all been tweeting Murphy’s praises.

Forget Marvel and DC – where is the Henry Rollins comic?

Is that Einstein wielding a huge motherfucking sword? I wanna read that comic.

I think Einstein might be wielding Cloud’s sword from FF7.

I love this pic!

DC doesn’t deserve him. They’ve barely used him.

seeing that art he should go for image or top cow for dc and marvel would just have him use his talents on their latest crossover of the month. or he will wind up burned out at dc due to editor interferance all the time.

@ Jacob, I believe they “haven’t” used him, due to his work on the upcoming Joe the Barbarian.

In fairness, he’s also done a Hellblazer arc for DC too, they just haven’t published it yet.

They did publish his Hellblazer story with Jason Aaron, or are you talking about a different story?

Punchy, Murphy wrapped a second Hellblazer arc a while back, before starting on Joe the Barbarian. Pages from that second arc are in his Deviant Art gallery, and they’re definitely worth a look.

So, Vertigo has been giving him steady work for a while. They’re just sitting on it.

Yep, just made the “Childhood Heroes” pic my desktop wallpaper. That is fantastic.
