Regarding the first appearance of Mickey, I was under the impression that while Plane Crazy was animated first, Disney was unable to find a distributer for the cartoon. It wasn't until he decided to add sound to Steamboat Willie that Disney was able to sell Mickey. So while Plane Crazy was the first created, Steamboat Willie was the first released, which is why it's considered the first Mickey Mouse cartoon.
