Marvel’s monkey business
Who is this monkey? Why is he two-fisting handguns? Who’s his tailor? I have no clue what the answers to these questions are — all I know is he’s drawn by simian specialist Frank Cho and being teased on Marvel.com as “Marvel’s hottest new character.” If there’s one thing for sure about comics fans, it’s that we’re monkey whores, so I am therefore passing this on to you our readers.
Tune into Marvel.com on Monday for the big reveal, whatever the heck that might be. And check out Cho’s blog for a sketch version of the piece labeled “Hitman Monkey.” Are there two more glorious words in the English language?

Cho called it Hitman Monkey.
Which means, perhaps, that Marvel is taking that LOLCatz image of the monkey in the tub with the kid (http://www.pandadesigns.net/files/browse/hitman_monkey.jpg) and making a character out of it.
Because, really, why NOT?

“Are there two more glorious words in the English language?”
Not when used in conjunction like that there isn’t.
Here’s to hoping this isn’t in the Marvel Apes Universe.

Looks interesting… but I’m suspending judgment. Given this country’s history of race relations, there’s little more risky than a “Hitman Monkey” character. Depending on how it is written, Marvel could end up with some serious egg on their faces over this…

None of this seems appealing. Especially not given the Marvel Apes line. If this is from a Cho project it’s likely Ultimates 4 related, if it’s promo material, get ready for more MArvel Apes I’m betting.

Probably an announcement of Marvel publishing an adaptation of the Hitman video game/movie series. Don’t really get the ape thing, though.

I’m thinking it’s an all-new character…monkey with the sensiblility and dress code of a Reservoir Dog…I’M IN!!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it ties into a new variation on an old Marvel character the first one that comes to mind is a Wakandan white gorilla called Man-Ape that I remember from the early issues of the 80s West Coast Avengers comics, but this character isn’t a gorilla. Hmmm…

Looks like another dumb idea form marvel that won’t last no more than 12 issues. You can take that to the bank.

I hope “Hitman Monkey” isn’t the character’s actual name. Is he man or monkey–or is he both? “Hitmonkey” would be better. How about “Gunmonkey” or “Assassin Ape”?

Maybe just a modern update of the existing pulp character Six-Gun Gorllla?
http://www.hampsteadandnorreys.co.uk/wizard-sixgun-gorilla-18march1939-p-74.html
“A baby gorilla is caught in Africa and brought to the United States. In Colorado the baby gorilla is sold to Johnson, a prospector. Johnson is a kind man and treats the gorilla well, naming him “O’Neil” and feeding and raising him. O’Neil grows up to love Johnson. Johnson teaches O’Neil how to dig, fetch firewood, haul up buckets of water, cook, clean, and load and fire a revolver. Unfortunately, Johnson is murdered for what he knows about “the great motherlode.” When O’Neil finds Johnson’s body, he swears revenge. O’Neil straps on a bandolier and two six-shooters and begins tracking the murderers across a hundred miles of Colorado mountains and badlands. He picks them off one by one, meanwhile discovering a talent for holding up stagecoaches and using them to chase fleeing gunmen. The death of Johnson is ultimately avenged by O’Neil, better known as…Six-Gun Gorilla!”

I just thought of something, what if the monkey is a distraction? What if we’re not seeing the entire picture here?
This image reminds me of Marvel’s early solicits of Dark Reign, The List : X-Men. It was just Namor on a black background but when Utopia was over we saw the whole thing.
So with this in mind, what if Marvel’s “hottest new character” is new female character with a trigger happy monkey sidekick? And who better to present this babe than Frank Cho!

“How about ‘Gunmonkey’ or ‘Assassin Ape’?”
How about “monkey” and “ape” aren’t interchangable? Gunmonkey would work, but is awful. Assassin Ape wouldn’t work at all, since the primate in question is a monkey.
“Looks like a japanese macaque.”
Absolutely does.

I honestly thought that this was another related project for MARVEL APES…..
…..Although you can bet that from the Solicts that Spidey & ‘Pool are really ‘up the creek’ against this character…..

Hitman Monkey is kind of an obvious name, but I guess with a character like this they’re not really going for subtlety. Although his nickname should totally be The Macabre Macaque, because it’s just to awesome to pass up.

Marvel is a little “Johnny come lately” on this one. My self-published comic about a gun toting monkey, Banana Panic, has been out on iPhone for months. and it’s free to boot!
