Tom Brevoort on Marvel vs. DC

“Well, I’ve proved that talking smack on Twitter gets you press,” tweeted Marvel Executive Editor Tom Brevoort on Friday. And indeed, Brevoort’s Twitter account and blog have proven so juicy of late — witness his wager on whether Marvel’s upcoming Siege event will wrap up before DC Comics’ current Blackest Night crossover — that I’m thinking about awarding him an honorary Robot 6 membership.

Brevoort was in unusually fine form Friday night, though, even by his own standard of dishing (and taking) criticism. In a series of tweets regarding DC’s capture of the top six sales slots for October, Brevoort wrote:

I hear tell that folks up at the DC offices have been feeling pretty cocky this past week or so. To which I say … first off, good for them for having a good month. But also, don’t confuse having the top six books with winning the month. We still took both dollars and units. And too, that was in a month where a few of our big books slipped out of the month. I don’t think we have to worry at all about January, for instance, where SIEGE #1 is up against a BLACKEST NIGHT skip month. Cold Jan [for] DC. By that same token, enjoy the moment–because all of those books that missed [October] are in the November numbers.

In addition, Brevoort replied to a variety of reader responses to his trash-talk tweets, including an enthusiastic endorsement from Rob Liefeld.

And oh, yeah, he kicked it all off by teasing three major deaths in Siege, “at least one of whom will surprise you.” I’d encourage you to follow his Twitter feed yourselves, but as the middleman, I can’t very well endorse cutting myself out, can I?

God, we’ll never be passed this.

Look, I’m a big DC fan, it’s great that they got the top 6 books…but does anyone really think that Marvel is going to lose to DC in market share? It’s absurd. It’s happened once in all the time I’ve been following the numbers, 1 YL.

Their characters are more marketable, are more popular, for whatever reason. Just enjoy your books!

Considering that Ms. Marvel’s getting cancelled with #50, please, please tell me that one of the three major deaths isn’t Carol Danvers?

It better not be Bucky Barnes.

Glad to see Marvel’s love of commerce outweighs their artistic sensibilities.

sadly you’re wrong. It is a competition for Brevoort and folks over at DC (whoever he’s referring too). Either way, the inane back and forth between the “big two” was one of the reasons I gave up on their books. I realize it’s supposed to be “all in good fun”….but it stopped being funny a LONG time ago.

Of course it’s a competition. It’s business; given finite resources, success is zero-sum. For readers, it’s only a competition insofar as any reader feels compelled to assume a pathological association of his or her own self-worth and identity with any single company’s success. But for people within these companies, the competition is very real. Jobs and livelihood depend on it.

As opposed to DC’s ‘artistic sensibilities’ which lie somewhere between “batshiat crazy” (Grant Morrison) and utterly frickin’ clueless (Dan DiDio), at least Marvel has a DIRECTION.

I mean, the Flamingo? Really? A stereotypically gay, monosyllabic (downright, Rorscahchian really) super-villain is Grant Morrison’s Big New Idea?

*shrug* Batroc’s scarier.

I agree that it is inane, but it is pretty much a one-sided “back and forth”. DC usually says little about Marvel, yet Marvel is always yapping on.

Probably not. Probably just congratulating themselves on good sales. Marvel has dominated the market, and will continue to dominate the market. DC knows this, and knows that one month does not equal a lifelong sales lead.

Brevoort needed something to yammer on about, so he created a false story to try to make himself and Marvel look big. It’s a sad, pathetic, psychological need that he just never seems to be able to fulfill.

And bragging about an endorsement from Rob Liefeld? Lamest of lame.

People sure are taking 140 letter aphorisms seriously these days. Jesus Christ. Take a chill pill. DC- and Marvel employees can fool around and make little jokes on each other accounts as much as they want to.

And the reason Marvel tends to “say” more than DC is probably, because the company’s image, as a whole, is a bit less formal.

And man, don’t knock the Flamingo. First off- It’s hardly the only villain Morrison has created for Batman, and secondly, it’s entertaining. Plus where Batman Pre-R.I.P. was about defining and toying around with the idea of Batman, Batman & Robin seems more set on exploring the Joker. Which is why all of the villains in it, are different reflections on the Joker as a character. I know it can be chagrine to people, but I do enjoy Morrison’s derridian approach to the series.

I disagree about it being entertaining. It didn’t entertain me.

Those two don’t seem to really line up for me. I suppose you could have both, but at least Grant’s not going in any obvious direction.

I like Tom and he’s a great editor, but he’s off base on this for many many reasons.

DC isn’t allowed to feel good about some success?

And does he really think someone isn’t going to buy Siege because of Blackest Night or vice versa?

People will buy or not on whether they think its good or crap — plain and simple!
