Send Us Your Shelf Porn!

Put down that third cup of coffee, it’s time for Send Us Your Shelf Porn, where bookshelves buckle and the trades face spine out. Today’s entry comes from Jamie Tarquini. Jamie had a pretty nice set up in his old apartment, which you can see a little bit of here. He moved recently, however, and was kind enough to send us some photos of his new arrangement, which I think is actually a better set-up than he had before.

Before we begin, let me remind you that I’m always on the lookout for good Shelf Porn pics. If you’ve got a great comics collection (or even adequate one) that you’d like to highlight here, just drop me an email with some photos (along with a brief description) at cmautneratcomcastdotnet.

And how on to Jamie’s collection:

Comics_cubes

Hello all!  I’m a Sr. Business Analyst from the Boston, MA area.  I’ve been collecting comics since I was about 5 but seriously collecting since 1993 when I was about 18.  Spider-Man has always been my focus, but it’s really all about the Marvel Universe as a whole.  Since finishing off my Amazing Spider-Man run (all but that darn elusive – and EXPENSIVE Amazing Fantasy #15) and all of his off-shoot series I’ve enjoyed getting as much as I can of the MU as a whole, which is the bulk of my collection.  I know it’s not rational, but I’d love to own every Marvel story in either reprint or 1st printing-comic form eventually.  That’s one reason I’ve been getting the Golden Age and Atlas Age Marvel Masterworks that have been coming out recently and also why I have so many of the Marvel Essentials.

What you’ll see in those cubes above is all Marvel stuff.  Really, it’s all various.  The stuff big enough to get a long box has been moved (Avengers, Captain America, etc.).  Of course, then there’s a few DC and indy boxes too – I don’t discriminate.  ;)   Since getting so many of the collections of older Marvel books, Ive even played around with the Golden Age books.  Mostly I’ve decided to chase down LB Cole covers (look him up, you’ll be amazed!) and I have about 60 now.

Like I mentioned previously I don’t discriminate and back in the attic I still have a ton of action figures that hopefully I’ll find a place to display.  I used to work at a Warner Brothers Studio Store, and not only did I fall in love with the Batman Animated Series (and all the cartoons that followed it) but the action figures too.  So from there I learned to appreciate animation art and I’m lucky to own a few cels, even a Stan Lee signed Spider-Man seri-cel and an original production cel from Akira.

I just moved into a new house, and I don’t have quite as much room to display as I used to, but I still have enough.  Overall I collect what I love and as you can see, I love quite a lot!  I very much enjoy meeting the creators that I admire, and have about two long boxes of signed comics to show for it.  I haven’t met Stan Lee – YET – but I do have 2 books from his personal collection that I’m quite proud of.

Statue_Det2

I’ve been into collecting statues for over 10 years now, and that’s a great hobby.  It’s kind of like action figures for adults.  Mainly I collect whatever I can find room for from Bowen Designs.  They aren’t too big but have a fantastic sense of design and variety of characters.  They even made a Doop once, if you can believe it!

A while back I got into some original art, but not a ton.  It’s hard to display a lot of that stuff, and expensive too!  I still have a handful of commissions and posters that would look great around the house I have to get framed.

I know you’re wondering, so here it is:  I’m nearly done cataloging all of my books thanks to ComicBase and I’m at about 17,000 – and that’s counting a trade as one book.  Still, I’m not quite done yet.

I don’t blog quite as much as I’s like to, but feel free to send me an email if you have any questions about my collection or if you would like to follow me on Google’s new Buzz you can find me at:  pmpknface@gmail.com.  Thanks for looking!  – Jamie

PS:  Here is my Comic Art Fans page, if you want to see what else I’ve got.

A most impressive collection! (and maybe a little extreme….)

Glad you enjoy it!

Let me go get my thesaurus and look up the word “amazing.”

So you’re the guy keeping the bust makers alive.
And i assume that’s an Ed Hannigan cover?

Very well lighted displays. I know you aren’t finished yet but they looks good.

Very Impressive Collection. It must have cost you a lot of money.

Nice…Doom stands alone.

Thanks guys! Yeah, this is my stuff. What can I say – it took a while.

“And i assume that’s an Ed Hannigan cover?”

Actually it’s a re-creation of PPSSM #99 done by Al Milgrom.

FYI – Here’s another pick of what’s BEHIND those cubes…

Oh, and these are from a few years ago at my old apartment:

ENJOY!

Where’d you get those cubes pmpkinface?

Hey ‘Tek Dupin! When my LCS, Comicopia in Kenmore Sq near Fenway Park (http://www.comicopia.com/ ) was renovating their shop they sold them to me. Its not a big store but they used these to house their extensive TPB’s and then went with a new layout. I got them for a steal and took all that I had space for. You can find them at any wood making store, usually $10-12 a piece.

I really like them because I can access books easily, and move them around without much stress. You can even put stuff BEHIND the comics. I have some action figures, some Spidey TV Guides, a bunch of various things. Actually, there is a card box (think baseball cards) in the back of each cube. It keeps the comics closer to the front of the cube.

In the past I’ve also put a comic in each cube facing front and made a nifty display. :D

Thanks, and great collection pmpkinface!!! :)

WOHA!!! i think i sheirked in amazement when i saw that he even has a fatman bust!!!!

Nice collections, guys. I’d take some pictures of mine, but my digital camera is RIP, atm and my cell phone camera sucks nards.

I’m not sure how many comics you guys have, but my collection is EASILY up to ~20,000 issues deep by now…. and counting. Unlike you guys, I’m not really into the figures or maquettes. I’ve got a couple on my desk, just to play around with while working, but nothing collectible. I’m a comic guy

I started to seriously collect comics when I was 10 years old in 1983 and comics were about $0.60. Since then I’ve managed to buy about 15 comics a week, every week, for the past 26+ years.

Generally, I spend about $60 a week on floppies. Not as much as some people, but, as you can guess, it quickly adds up. Hence the 20k+ issue collection.

..

HEY!!!

Where’s your Tick bust?

Super-HTF.

Only 500 made.

..

..

AMAZING staute collection.

You are my obsessive-compulsive hero.

Dr. OCD: Coming SOON from Marvel Comics Group.

..

..

You NEED a Super-Skrull bust. Not the Bowen one, the GOOD one.

NEED.

hehe

..

That’s really cool of your mom to let you have all that shit in her house.

lol @ eric
Totally messed up.
=)

Very cool to look at; thanks for sharing!

Whoa, Nelly! Impressive bunch you got there.

Good god damn that’s a lot of comics, I am envious. About how many new comics do you add a week?

Nice to see a member from http://www.statuemarvels.com/ getting some props! You guys should see all the other display pics we have over there!….

http://www.statuemarvels.com/f88/

Love this column. Great collection there. The statues are really impressive, but also the original Spider-man art (looks like a splash page of cosmic spidey but I may be wronf) and the Alex Ross Joker/Harley Quinn (if that’s an original).
A suggestion for future entries: have at least one pic with the proud collector in it. Come on, we wanna see a face behind these wicked collections.

wish i could put my stuff out, but the wife wont let me, awesome stuff yo

Awesome collection! I’m envious.

Where’d you get those spiffy glass display cases for your statues, and did they cost as much as the statues themselves?

I like all your statues..your comic collection is amazing..and I also appreciate you being from the bean(boston) but why the heck don’t you have(or at least I ddidnt see in the pics) any deadpool statues???

No Merc???

Don’t touch that. That’s mine!
MINE MINE MINE MINE

Thanks to my close pal, Pete who is also good pals with Jamie… invited me over to his old apartment a few years when I was back in Boston for a brief visit. We knocked back a couple of cold ones & caught up on the Robot Chickens stored up on the Tivo. Good people & good times. I knew this guy had a lot of comics and stuff but I wasn’t quite mentally prepared to what I was going to see. Wow is all I have to say. This dude needs a warehouse, store or a museum to do his collection justice. Just the mere volume of big boxes is mind boggling. Not to mention the many great autographed pieces he has whether they be books, or prints, or original art signed by writers, creators, & artists.Tons of toys, too. What a great collection and to boot… he’s a really cool guy. Nice goin, Jamie!

This is an absolutely wicked collection. Wonder how much time is spend reading all of that…?

I really liked that Elektra poster he had, never seen it before, and the Maleev Typhoid Mary cover was a perfect choice.

I’d house sit there for a month, no worries!

Ryan – I do what I can, but there are a bunch of unread books in there. I’m trying to catch up…. slowly. The Elektra poster was a promo item for Elektra Assassin. I’m a HUGE Bill Sienkiewicz fan and it took a while to track down. The Typhoid piece was given to me for free by Maleev. Good story there…

RICH T – Whassup man? Thanks for stopping by! The collection has grown a bit since you’ve seen it. Ask Pete! :)

Larfleeze – You stay away! :p

mrwadewilsonhimself – I’ve got the 1st Bowen Deadpool bust. Check out my photobucket for close-ups:
http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg278/pmpknface/C5_3_hawk.jpg I also have all his books since hist 1st mini.

Jason – the glass cases are from Ikea and are called DETOLF’s. They are $60 a piece and the lights are $5 a piece. Pretty easy to install, just make sure you do it correctly.

The Elements – I know I’m a lucky guy to have a girl that doesn’t mind this, and actually likes it! She likes the Iron Man ones the most, and isn’t a fan of the monsters. She also reads a bit too.

zabba – Check out my comic art fans page for more ( http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryDetail.asp?GCat=2177 ) but that’s a Spidey re-creation pf PPSSM #99 by Al Milgron and that’s just a poster I had framed. I just really liked it! I have sooooooo many other prints and posters signed too. One day…. FYI – The Silk Spectre by James Jean is a signed too. That was made to prder, so there can’t be many of them.

As for a pic, here’s me and my Dad on the Field at Fenway last Father’s Day after the game:
http://picasaweb.google.com/pmpknface/FatherSDay2009AtFENWAY#5350176154010568450

Rob – I’d love to see your collection if you couud take a pic of it. I brought up a thread in the Classic Comics section that was dead where people can post links in it to your Geek Dens.

Kirth – I have the Bowen Super Skrull. He’s up by Galactus. If you mean the DST one, I’m not a fan of their scale. The Hard Hero DD I have is a bit bigger than BD too, but is just so friggin’ cool I had to have it.

tomstewdevine – I have a pretty hefty pull list. Drop by the Pipeline board here on CBR once a week where we share what we’re getting! It’s 85% Marvel with some manga, and then collections of random stuff (Vertigo, Image, DC, indy…).

Al – Glad you found this buddy! Feel free to post a link here from your site in the BD thread!

I think those cases are from Ikea. We have some in our store. they’re really inexpensive but look awesome.

Great collection! I often wondered who was the one buying the busts like fin fang foom, now I know!

Now that is quite the sexy collection! I will definitely be checking out your CAF as well :)

Was that a Forbush Man bust? You, sir, are sick. And I am totally jealous.

Eric, that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

I like how the guy responded to every other post, and ignored yours….LOL.

Must be true! Thanks mom!!

Jamie, that collection of yours rocks!! Thanks for sharing!

Ya, I thought that was Forbush Man too, not Fatman.

I see that you read Hikaru no Go too.

Jenn – Yup, they are detolfs from Ikea. $60 a piece plus $5 for the light. The corner cabinet was from an antique furniture store, and that cost a LOT more. It’s a great cabinet though! Adjustible shelves, built in light, and magnetic doors.

Terry – You guessed it, that’s a Forbush Man. I keep him in that cabinet because of the mirrors, and then you can see the “F” on his cape! Some of my other pieces are rare, like: Mandroid, Aunt May, Jack O’Lantern, etc. I also had my Ultron chromed.

Dan / Eric – I actually tried responding 3x yesterday, and the page kept eating my posts! That’s why I eventually tried to post a few times. I’m also at work at the moment… however – the funny thing is my mom can’t wait to get the rest of my crap out of her house now that I own a house of my own. The baseball cards are now in my possession and next up are the Star Wars and He-Man action figures!!!

Thanks Mike! I know there are a few more MB I have that aren’t shown. My Hydra 3-pack, Bi-Beast, FF full sized, and I think I few more.

I’m also quite happy with my Transformers DEVISTATOR that you can see from far away in one pic. I’ve had those figs since I was a kid!

I’ve gotten one email question, and by all means feel free to contact me if you have questions.

THANKS AGAIN!

olokin – Yeah! It’s great stuff! I found it after I kinda got into Go. I’m a few vol’s behind. I know I bought vol’s 14-15, but they got lost somehow. I think I left them somewhere when I was travelling. I’ll re-buy them and then I have up to the most recent one.

I also have all the Lone Wolf & Cub’s, and the rest of the DH stuff from that line. Sanctuary was a great manga. Blade of the Immortal is one of my faves! As is all the Junji Ito stuff, and I’m really into the Tezuka stuff put out by Vertical now. I just read the new Blackjack yesterday.

Have you tried Oishinbo? I love food and Japanese culture so I find it a fun read.

If you know anyone who has a Japanese version of AKIRA vol 5 lemme know! :D

Man you are hardcore Got girlfriend?

anj2099 – Yup. We live togather too. The corner curio is downstairs in a living area, next to the 6ftx4ft signed and framed EARTH X litho. The full-sized display you see with speakers in the picture is on the top of my entertainment center. She likes ‘em too! :)

See those cubes are exactly what I would love to have. it would be prefect for all my trades.

hello. i have over 2,000,000 comics. mostly 90′s stuff. i plan on selling it in about 20 years and retiring in Barbados.
