Whedon, Spurlock teaming for Comic-Con documentary
Marc Malkin of E! Online reports that Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) are teaming up to make a documentary about Comic-Con International in San Diego. It “will be centered on a still-to-be-cast group of convention-going superfans,” he says, and will follow them for a few months before the con, in addition to seeing what they’re up to in San Diego.
Both Whedon and Spurlock are no strangers to Comic-Con. Whedon, of course, has attended numerous times to promote things like Dollhouse and Buffy, while Spurlock was there last year recruiting fans for The Simpsons 20th anniversary documentary he did. And both have a relationship with Dark Horse, as Spurlock is working on Supersized: Strange Tales From a Fast Food Culture with the publisher.

Project Fanboy going underway! It would be funny if the real life version was anything like that Star Wars fanboy movie.

Not to say been there done that but, been there done that. You need to check out a movie called Hobocon. Screenhead did a great review of it and they are just now making some noise with it. Their version may not be the same premise and definitely not the same budget, but I bet the same story comes out of it.

Spulock walked the MoCCA Art Fest one year. I gave him some Skyscrapers since we’re both WV boys.

I knew Spurlock is a West Virginia native, Chris, but I didn’t realize you are, too. We’re everywhere!

I thought Morgan Spurlock did a good job with that Simpsons documentary in showcasing fandom in a mostly positive and fun light. Hope that’s the case with the Comic Con documentary. There’s been enough lampooning on fanboys over the years.
