Straight for the art | 365 Days of Lost

LOST 365 #4: "John" by Jared Stumpenhorst

LOST 365 #4: "John" by Jared Stumpenhorst

I think this is my favorite artistic tribute to Lost yet: Artist Jared Stumpenhorst’s LOST 365 is a daily project in which Stumpenhorst will create one Lost-related work of art every day for a year. The pieces so far boast a strong sense of design and lack the usual cutesiness you tend to see with such projects — and, dare I say it, they’re occasionally rather haunting. Warning: vague, artistically rendered spoilers ahoy.

Umm… If it actually LOOKED like Terry O’Quinn/Locke/Smocke, and not like freakin’ GOLLUM, I might like it better.

I’d like to see you try it, Shaun.

I think these illustrations are great. Simple and elegant.

@ Ugly: “Don’t tell me what I can’t do!” Or maybe I should say “Don’t tell me what I can’t dislike” instead?

Dude, I never said I could draw like that. I mean, there’s never been a comics artist YOU didn’t like and were critical of? Or perhaps an author or filmmaker whose work you can’t stand? Of course there is. So can you do better than any of those people?

You’ll have to explain how my inability to draw like that (not that you would know that I can’t, seeing as you like don’t know me), somehow validates that work. I’ve seen some nice drawings of John Locke out there, and this just isn’t one of them.

I didn’t say the artist wasn’t talented, just that it looks more like Gollum than John Locke. I stand by that assessment. I also stand by right to have that opinion.

thanks for mentioning my work on here!! i really appreciate the kind write up!!

shaun: i definitely agree with you that the particular rendering of Locke that was chosen up there is a little off, and now that you mention it does look a little bit like gollum :( that specific image was done without using a reference image and in hindsight i probably should have looked at something when drawing it. anyway, i’ve been an artist for a long time so i can handle some criticism.

thanks again and i hope that you all will follow along and check out my progress throughout the year!
