Best Bets | Free Comic Book Day edition

fcbd2010On Saturday stores around the world will play host to Free Comic Book Day, the annual promotion designed to introduce new readers to comics by giving away no fewer than 33 different titles. (USA Today rounds up creators to discuss this year’s offerings.) Many retailers, of course, also sponsor signings and other activities as part of the event.

Rochester, New Hampshire | Jet Pack Comics (37 N. Main St.) and the Rochester Main Street Association present the Rochester Free Comic Book Day Festival, featuring special guests Ed McGuinness and Craig Rousseau, and a line-up of small-press creators.

Brooklyn, New York | In addition to its regular FCBD activities, Bergen Street Comics (470 Bergen St.) hosts a release party for First Second Books’ young-readers titles. Guests include Jane Yolen and Mike Cavallaro (Foiled), George O’Connor (Zeus, Athena), Leland Purvis (Resistance), and Pascal Dizin (City of Spies).

Edmonton, Alberta | The three Happy Harbor Comics locations host local artists, including Robot 6 contributor Stephanie Chan, drawing sketches in exchange for donations to the Edmonton Food bank.

Vancouver, British Columbia | Elfsar Comics & Toys (1007 Hamilton St.) features Camilla D’Errico, Steve Rolston, Diana Greenhalgh and Toren Atkinson.

This months winning Zuda entry, Eldritch’s creators Aaron Alexovich (Serenity Rose, Confessions of a Blabbermouth) and Drew Rausch (Sullengrey, Shrek, Haunted Mansion, Cthulhu Tales) are signing at Comics Unlimited in Huntington Beach, CA from 11 am until 1 pm.

Quick note–Star Clipper is on Delmar, not Belmar, for anyone trying to get directions to the store (and you should–it’s awesome!).
