DC Entertainment confirms Young Justice cartoon [Updated]
Today DC confirmed a rumor that started floating around earlier this year — a Young Justice cartoon is on its way to the Cartoon Network.
From the Source:
YOUNG JUSTICE is an all-new series produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based upon the characters from DC Comics. In YOUNG JUSTICE, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over – to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? How much harder will it be to prove yourself in a world of super powers, super villains and super secrets? Are you ready to come of age in such a world? Are you ready for life or death rites of passage? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? The members of Young Justice—Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis—are about to find out.
They also announced a “animated sketch-comedy series” based on Mad Magazine.
Update: The Source has added some official artwork for the series.

….Artemis?
So is this Arrowette, Speedy, or someone altogether new?

I’m shocked that the Mad show bit isn’t huge news! I mean, there was Mad TV, but this will probably actually have some relation to the magazine! I’m excited to potentially see Sergio Aragones’ comics animated, among all the other artists. I think it could be pretty awesome (or really bad)

I actually enjoyed YOUNG JUSTICE a lot when I was a teenager. Congrats to DeZago, David, and Nauck; I hope they get something out of this.
And Amit, it looks like Arrowette with a less stupid name. HERBIE the Robot notwithstanding, sometimes TV producers make smart decisions to make clumsy comic history more accessible (I know a four-year-old who LOVES “Beast Boy” on Teen Titans but would probably like him less if they had kept his name as “Changeling”).

I’m surprised that they can use Superboy. I mean, after the big stink, you wouldn’t think they would use him in Young Justice… MEANWHILE…no Wonder Girl again. Still…..very very much looking forward to this!

Spike: I really wish there was a Wonder Girl here. Cassie or Donna – either one, I don’t care. I love both of them equally.

Artemis might be a mashup of Wonder Girl and Arrowette – an Amazonian archer. Aqualad looks like Kid Doc Savage.

The first thing I thought when I saw that promotional image was, “They brought back Hero from Superboy and the Ravers… huh.” I know we haven’t had a good look at the new Aqualad’s costume, but the one we have here doesn’t look anything like any other Aqualad or Tempest costume I’ve seen before, other than it’s red. Honestly, it looks more like Hawk without a cowl.

I loved Young Justice back in the day. Especially the mini that spawned it and the crossover it spawned.
I think Artemis is a wonder girl/arrowette combo.
I don’t mind aqualad being black because saying Blaqualad out loud is a joy.
