Mark Millar vs. … Marvel? [Updated]

The teaser image that broke Mark Millar's internet in half

The teaser image that broke Mark Millar's internet in half

So you’ve seen the X-Men teaser images Marvel’s been putting out featuring (among other strange character choices like Elektra and She-Hulk II) Blade and what sure looks like Vampire Jubilee, right? So has Ultimate Comics Avengers writer — and current toast of Hollywood thanks to Kick-Ass — Mark Millar.

Apparently the “X-Men vs. vampire mutants” storyline people have deduced from the teaser images is awfully similar to an upcoming Ultimate Avengers storyline Millar’s been talking about for years…and he’s very, very upset about this. Like, to the point where if I were Marvel, I’d worry that he might show up at the office in a green-and-yellow jumpsuit with a crowbar or two.

Here’s the rundown of Millar’s furious posts on his message board, in a thread titled “I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS X-MEN/ BLADE THING” (all-caps in original):

I’m just starting Ultimate Avengers 3, issue 5, and it’s the arc I’m maybe most proud of. As trailered forever, this is vampires in the Ultimate Universe attacking mutants and Blade brought in to help the Avengers as heroes go down one by one.

Now someone’s sent me a link to an X-Men event out two months previous that’s exactly the same idea.

What do I do? This is what JRJR and I were going to do 5 years ago before Enemy of the State and I’ve been talking about it in interviews (and on here) since Ultimate Avengers launched. Blade’s even on the cover to issue 1 as I’ve been excited about this since I had Blade painted on an ice cream truck in 1978.

I don’t want to pull the issues as they’re part of a complex plot that runs through my entire four arc run, but I’m almost finished now. I’m writing issue five of six and they’re really, really good.

How the Hell did this happen? It wouldn’t have been as big a deal if I hadn’t started the series yet, but it’s almost done and just going to look foolish following an X-Men event. Am honestly just so disgusted with this as I’ve talked about it many times. Thoughts on what I should do next?

I’m hoping this is some horrible misunderstanding. I’ve only seen what you’ve seen online with Blade and the X-Men and a vampire Jubilee (again, very close to stuff I’m doing). Fingers crossed this bullshit gets fixed, but am getting closer and closer to just doing my own stuff every day.

The difference [between this situation and examples like Blackest Night/Necrosha and Deep Impact/Armageddon] is that was competing companies with different characters. This is something I created for a company that’s being used within the same company and using the same characters, now two months earlier.

I’m going to speak to the guys and then take a night to think about this. But really, really pissed off about this as have put a lot of work into this and it’s really, really good.

We’ll see what happens. This storyline was planned 5 years ago, like I said, and was known at the company. But it’s been public knowledge since I started hyping Vampire X prior to Ultimate Avengers issue 1 coming out. The mods here read the original proposal I sent to all the Marvel bigwigs in 2005. I’m hoping this is all bullshit and the teasers are misleading.

I’m not changing anything. I did this first and it’s too tightly plotted with the other arcs to pull and replace with something new. I guess they could kill the series with the second arc and bring someone else to take in a new direction. I dunno. Hopefully it won’t come to that. We’ll see what they say when I speak to them tonight, but I couldn’t believe it when I saw this online. How the Hell did this happen when they have weekly meetings about what’s coming up across the line? I discussed this arc at the Marvel retreat in Summer 2008, weighing up with the guys whether to have Leinil do this arc or the Punisher/ Ghost Rider one.

Story continues below

Now, we’ve all seen Millar tout his own awesomeness in bombastic (and occasionally unrealistic) fashion for years at this point. There’s a little of that mixed in here, in fact. But I dunno about you, but seeing him get equally worked up about something else’s suckitude is almost frightening. Can he successfully fight a two-front war with Marvel and Roger Ebert?

Update: The Millarworld thread has been deleted following a post from Millar that read:

Hi guys

am now in boozer but just off the phone with dan b [Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley, presumably] and were all talking tomorow to sort this out. Have never had problem in ten years at company so expect this can be fixed fast. Dan assures me this was a misundrstanding and he’s a good bloke so have no reason to doubt. I don’t think this is as bad as it looked a litle earlier. Will keep you posted. Ps to mods. Please remove other threads in meantime.

The storyline connected to the “We are the X-Men” teasers is expected to be announced Sunday at C2E2.

If this really is what Marvel’s doing, it’s an entirely classless move. I may be a die-hard fan, and I know people have their issues with Millar and his tendency to fabricate stories, but the man is A.) really, really nice if you’ve ever met him and wouldn’t hurt a fly, and B.) completely telling the truth, because, yes, he’s been talking about this for friggin’ ever. So if we are getting X-Vampires in the 616, shame on whoever let that happen.

It’s so hard to take Millar seriously these days. Who knows if he’s making this up or not.

The latest….

Well what goes around, comes back around. If this is indeed true, then this is karma coming around and biting Millar in the butt.

I find it both ironic and funny as hell, that Millar is upset about Marvel “stealing” his idea, when he has done the same thing to Claremont with his “Enemy of the State” WOLVERINE arc from a few years ago.

“Classless” kinda sums up most of Marvel’s marketing moves over the last few years of its existence. I’m really not a fan of Millar but, assuming this isn’t some Andy Kaufman style stunt, I feel bad for him over this.

“this is vampires in the Ultimate Universe attacking mutants and Blade brought in to help the Avengers as heroes go down one by one.”

If that’s the premise of the arc he’s most proud of, I’m not terribly excited about reading the others, because that sounds kind of lame. Especially since he himself suggests that it’s not that far off from what he did in Enemy of the State with ressurected brainwashed heroes taking others down one by one.

But really, doesn’t this seem like a bit of a childish tantrum? It’s not until, what, the third post that he mentions he’s going to talk to the guys at Marvel about it. I’m not a professional writer, but I would have thought the professional thing to do would have been to talk to them and find out what was going on before you go ranting on the internet about how they might possibly be stealing your ideas based on your interpretation of one teaser image and some fan speculation.

That said, if he’s right, yeah, Marvel’s kind of screwing him and he has every reason to be pissed. But given how far in advance these storylines are planned, should a teaser image a week before the first issue of whatever this X-Men event is is going to be solicited be the first he’s hearing about it? It seems like the guy would have better connections in the company than that at this point.

Also, the X-Men vs vampire muntants? Less than six months after the end of the big X-Men vs zombie mutants crossover? God, I hope that’s not true.

Has Millar forgotten that Vol. 2 of THE ULTIMATES gave readers a Skrull invasion of Earth, the same thing that SECRET INVASION was about a few years later? Was the repetition of material then deliberate, accidental, or considered a non-issue?

It’s strange that Millar would consider the concept so precious, since people routinely emphasize that execution is more important than the idea. In this case, since the casts will be different, the storylines will inevitably be different.

In either storyline, what will prevent someone from using the Montesi Formula to banish vampires from Earth’s dimension and end the story after one issue?

So happy Blade X said exactly what I was thinking. Enemy of the State is a direct rip-off of Claremont’s idea of killing Wolverine, back in 1991 or even before, it may have been Uncanny 275 even, and then have him come back as their worst villain.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one that remembers this.

Millar is all bullshit these days. Kick-Ass was not the story of the world’s first real superhero, it’s been done before. Everything he’s doing has been done before. He has some great ideas from time to time, but they just get so blown out of proportion by his ego that it makes me feel sorry for him. That he thinks he’s God’s gift to comics and films and comics based on films. It’s sad.

I can’t wait until Kick-Ass comes out and he starts saying how it made 100 million. Really. Even if the box office figures say 40, he’s going to spin it to 100. Just like Civil War.

By the way, if anyone else has seen Kick-Ass the movie, were they as bored as me? It wasn’t hyper-violent, it wasn’t anything special. It was just a bunch of noise.

Sounds a bit like “Marvel Zombies… but with vampires instead!”

What has Millar said about this vampire arc of his? I don’t recall reading about it. I’m pretty much at a point where I need three witnesses for everything Millar says,

this is hillarious i can’t wait to see what happens… not in the comics mind you, in real life. i hope there is blood.

Danny, I understood your viewpoint until your vicious last sentence. Do you really want Millar and the others involved to actually physically harm one another over this? Seriously? That’s disgusting.

Millar creates more fake publicity. Yawn. His game is old.

For all the people whining about Millar ripping off Claremont – would you really enjoy Claremont’s take on Enemy of the State? Oh, Wolverine’s a villain, here’s 15 pages of captions to explain everything. And everyone speaks in exactly the same colloqialisms. Screw that.
Also, Brother Justin Crowe, you are a baby that can’t understand hyperbole.

Brian/Danny/whatever you want to call yourself, you’re precious. That wasn’t an attempt at hyperbole on your part, but merely a ridiculous attempt at semi-sarcastic humor.

And this “baby that can’t understand hyperbole” has a degree in communications, so if I were you, I’d watch your piss-poor grammar.

thank goodness for sense. First person I’ve heard call out that Kickass wasn’t original idea!
The world’s first ‘real’ superhero- haha. Besides Batman and most non super-powered superheros being ritten like that anyway (without desending to slowmo kungfu like in the matrix and more military equiptment than the A-team) – there was also this little project:
I’d say if this Marvel deal is similar to Millars plan it’s karma

i want mark miller to hurt people at marvel i don’t know how to be more straight forward than that. and “brian potter” is someone else that also agrees that you are overly sensitive little girl. come on man if i was going to “realistically” wish harm upon anyone i would have wanted Mark Miller to dress up in a wolverine costume and slash your 1 in 1000000000000000000000 communications diploma (seriously who doesn’t have one of these? it might as well be a general studies degree) to shreds. now i really DO hope there is blood.

also I am a different person than danny, but thanks for playing!

Those darn potter brothers…what will they do next???

@Captain trips: Bravo! Well done, sir.

I’m sure this is just Millar looking for publicity for something.

That’s bullshit. Did Mark Millar invent the Vampires? No. So he should just get over himself. What a cry baby. Vampires are everywhere since like forever. Ugh

But isn’t whole vampires hunting x-men kinda something that happened in Claremont & Byrne JLA:Tenth Circle arc?

Hyperbole is an X-Man?

I’m hoping they find an artist who can illustrate her powers of exaggeration!

I think the lamest part of this whole thing is deleting the threads where he whines.

even before all of this, hasn’t Millar already said that Ultimate Avengers will be his final work for Marvel for the foreseeable future? (Aside from creator-owned work, I’d love to see DC come knocking once his Marvel contract’s up; after years of reading Millar’s passionate geekouts over Superman, i’d love to see what he’d do with that character)

I’m sick of vampires everywhere. Invading books I collect. I HATE VAMPIRES. I’m reading Atomic Robo, guess what? They’re in Atomic Robo. I’m reading Chew, guess what? THEY’RE IN CHEW.

One more thing: The posting above reminded me that Captain Britain already did a big vampire-takeover storyline. Get over it, Millar.

I would think that someone who suffers from colitis shouldn’t be looking at life through the bottom of a bottle. Could one of Millar’s friends please get him into an AA program? Please?

While I appreciate the link, there wasn’t any “deducing” involved. Mr. Anonymous did know the teaser before it hit the internet, but his info on the direction wasn’t the product of making a smart guess at it based on the image. I’m sure the use of “deduced” was more based on liking how the sentence came together that way better than other options, but I just felt like clarifying that my source doesn’t trade in guesses.

I find it hard to believe that ANYTHING by Millar is “too tightly plotted.”

It’s funny someone talked about Millar needing to make up $100 million on Kick Ass (said obviously before it came out)–it made just over 96 million, plus millions more when the DVD was released…

well i can see why both sides would have issues…..marvel is one of the biggest comic book companies in the universe and they dont talk to each other about whats goin on in their books wtf…millar being pissed probably to because he spent time writing and coming up whit his hole story shit..and another book has the same shit goin on..and millar probably doesn’t want the competition…and the kick ass movie was aiiight…i wasn’t a big fan of how they didnt keep the original story from the comic book…
