As we noted yesterday, Archie Comics is introducing its first gay character later this year. Courtesy of Archie Comics, we have exclusive artwork of the character design for Kevin Keller. You can find more of it here.

“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” said Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater.

New York, NY (April 22, 2010): Archie Comics, home of the famous Riverdale High students Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Jughead, is about to welcome a new classmate this fall! On September 1st, Kevin Keller, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character, will be welcomed into the town of Riverdale.v202_300x461

“The introduction of Kevin is just about keeping the world of Archie Comics current and inclusive. Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books,” stated Archie Comics Co- CEO, Jon Goldwater.

VERONICA #202 features the full-issue story, “Isn’t it Bromantic?” that introduces Kevin, Archie Comics’ first openly gay character. Kevin Keller is the new hunk in town and Veronica just has to have him. After Kevin defeats Jughead in a burger eating contest at Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe, she desperately latches onto him. Mayhem and hilarity ensue as Kevin desperately attempts to let Veronica down easy and her flirtations only become increasingly persistent.

In addition to the new ongoing achievements at Archie Comics—the #4 iPad book app and most downloaded comics on iTunes, the launch of Stan Lee Comics, Archie’s Red Circle superheroes at DC, and exciting new partnerships with Abrams, Dark Horse and IDW—the introduction of Kevin as an openly gay character is part of the commitment to keep Archie properties reflective of the current world of teens and teen media.

Kevin arrives in VERONICA #202’s “Isn’t it Bromantic?” this September, in comic shops 9/1/2010 and on newsstands 9/14/2010.

Since I know you guys will see this because I’m posting it on the gaynouncement of Archie’s latest girlfriend, if you click “All CBR Blogs” on the drop-down, you (or at least I) get a server-side error as follows:

Fatal error: Template::AddParam() : Attempt to set value for non existent variable name ‘spinoff_date’ – this variable name doesn’t match any declarations in the template file in /var/www/docroot/Application.inc.php on line 923

Also you can only see the “All CBR Blogs” in the drop-down from the front page.

Gaynouncement.

“…first openly gay character…”–I think the implication here is clear…MISS GRUNDY.

I suppose it’s more newsworthy than “DC introduces 4,357th closeted gay character.”

Also, with those ginormous staring eyes, the new Archie character looks more like a “Marty Feldman” than a “Kevin”.

Drusilla lives!

Hum… interesting play on words if you ask me… I suppose Kevin being Riverdale’s first “openly gay” resident doesn’t necessarily mean he was Riverdale’s first gay resident.

My first thought is of a one-sided hypothetical phone conversation between two Archie executives

Archie exec: “If this doesn’t get them talking about Archie again…. what do you mean nothing will get them talking about Archie again?

But in all seriousness, every step towards acceptance and acknowledging that everyone is entitled to the same freedoms and rights as humans are steps in the right direction. One small step for Riverdale, one more foot forward for tolerant and enlightened culture.

Heh, “openly” gay. See http://www.adam-amy.com/images/archie_comics/jughead_is_gay.jpg

Interesting that they chose Jughead as the (b)romantic interest considering the joking speculation that he might be gay based off of his lack of serious love interest and his periodic claim that he doesn’t like girls.

Or, maybe based off of Kevin’s example, Miss Grundy will feel comfortable bringing her previously unseen longtime roommate to Riverdale faculty functions.

Does anyone even read Archie comics?

What’s funny is yesterday, when I saw the Archie cover with the interracial stuff between Archie and one of the Pussycats yesterday, I joked “What’s next! A gay character?”

Not that I think there’s anything bad about either. Actually, I think my only problem with it is how stereotypically drawn “Kevin” is. Seems to leave it open more to ridicule or insults.

Glad they’re becoming more inclusive, though.

Tbh, i dont think kevin is that stereotypically drawn-but there is definately something odd about his face

Next, Reggie frosts his hair to become the first Archie metrosexual.

Oh and good to know you fixed the drop-down link, but now it lists Robot 6 twice on the resulting page.

OK, what is this new blog Spinoff thing.

Hum… interesting play on words if you ask me… I suppose Kevin being Riverdale’s first “openly gay” resident doesn’t necessarily mean he was Riverdale’s first gay resident.

Oh, no– here’s the scoop on Archie’s first openly gay character:

http://www.comicmix.com/comic/comicmix/mundens-bar/9/reader/#p1

My only problem with this is that the stereotypical gay male is considered ‘blond’. course, looking at the characters they don’t have a ‘blond’ male, unless he is secondary.

And I’ve seen the ‘gay’ jughead.jpg.. which they also have a ‘gay’ Archie one too.. from what I remember seeing on TV ages ago for the Archies, Jughead is too much like Dobie Gillus’ (sp) Manard.. so the Kevin/Jughead storyline really wouldn’t seem to work.. Jughead’s attention span isn’t too long..

but in all, it’s great to hear about it being done. bringing alittle more variety to the Riverdale society..

“Gag Bag” will never be the same.
I would like to see a token gay character who looked average, but tokens have to stand out, I understand. Kevin doesn’t strike me as the kind of guy who would be tortured with his little situation, so it’s maybe hard to empathize his plight. Perhaps the older generation might give him a hard time (Pop Tate, maybe?), but the gang would get tired of pointing out that Kevin is gay, just as the audience would tire of reading it.

Jughead was the gay character from day one, so I am not sure why there’s a need for a new one. Saying he isn’t is fair enough, because Jughead comes from a different time, and mainstream audiences couldn’t handle a known character being outed. Introducing a gay character brings with it the heavy burden that teen comic book characters have sexual interests outside of kissing and holding hands.
Jughead certainly is a guy who can figure out Kevin Keller, but is more “out” than Kevin in his own way. The only girl Juggie isn’t catty with is Betty. Perhaps he’s plainly asexual, which is equally freaky to some folks.
Kevin’s usefulness as a handsome gay character will reduce him to being another Chuck Clayton over time, which is a pity. Will they have a story about Kevin being late for school and needing Dilton’s help? No, they have Archie the fuckup to do that. IF WE’RE LUCKY, we might see a story where Kevin tests Reggie’s heterosexuality, but I doubt it.

The artwork has improved greatly over the years, I will say.

Jughead isn’t homosexual; he just doesn’t fall over every loosely-dressed, self-disrespecting female that prods along. He liked that one red-head, and in Time Police, Archie’s descendant is his girlfriend.
