Send us your Shelf Porn!
Welcome once again to Shelf Porn, our weekly visit inside the walls of a fan’s collection. Today’s collection belongs to one Chaos McKenzie, who shows off his comics, trades, graphic novels, original art, action figures and stuffed animals. As you can see in the picture above, he’s agot a nice collection of Power Girl-related art and comics.
If you’d like to contribute to Shelf Porn, just send a write-up and pictures to jkparkin@yahoo.com.
Take it away, Chaos!

So apparently my room absorbs light like Dr. Light on crack… these might all be too dark, but hopefully you’ll be able to use some of them.
Major themes: Power Girl, X-Men, Books, Doctor Who, Power Girl, Muppets, New Gods, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (we do not like to talk about the new movie). I’ve always been dependent on sensory overload, so my walls have always been packed but then I worked in a comic shop for years and things got a little crazy. I had to pare down on the shots sent in, as I just couldn’t document every angle to capture all of it.
Rogue and Power Girl are my favorite all time comic book characters, but I have no shrine to Rogue as I have never really liked any of her figures and when getting sketches from Artists, Power Girl is just always more fun. Also, to be clear, I’m a big ol’ gay man, with a preference for the bitchy Power Girl of old over the we love her for her breasts of today, but Jimmy and Amanda have helped me accept her growth as a character.
I’ve always been a major bibliophile, you will note there is a huge mix of graphic novels, regular novels, and history books – what’s shown is only the first layer the majority of all of my shelves have two to three tiers of books behind.
I used to be a keep the toys in their packages type of guy, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve discovered a great love of dioramas and general toy tom foolery… hence the newer toys getting little battle set-ups (X-Men vs The Brood, Excalibur posing in a rusty London alley, Longshot vs everybody). Particular attention goes into the Muppet display in which I try to create scenes that would could actually happen with the characters I’ve collected.
Jim Henson is my first geekdom, all things Henson really. I’ve never been just a DC guy or a Marvel guy (I think I was 12 by the time I accepted that every super hero ever didn’t live around the corner from each other). I’m a big history buff, I read a lot of literature, have a special fondness for all things Victorian (stories set there, the history of, stuff written then) and three or four shelves are devoted to that entirely. I also don’t separate my comics from my other books, though Marvel and DC have their own shelves (I integrated any Vertigo books that feel like they happen in DC proper with the Superhero fare which is why the DC shelf is much bigger). The only comic I buy monthly anymore is X-Men (which is a catch all for all things X, hence their lack of presence on the Marvel shelf, though the lead figure family is nice tribute to them for me – but why, oh why, is there no Dazzler? Longshot? Sage? – yes, you heard me – why is there no SAGE?).
I think when I eventually move to a new place I will only be keeping my books, errr, no forget it, I love it all.
Enjoy!

What a fun piece – I’ve never actually read this feature previously, the title just put me off (why not shelf candy?). Always assumed it was just a photo and a namecheck.

You know, a lot of people complain about the title, and I agree, but I never heard a plausible replacement name until you just said Shelf Candy. Cool idea.

Yeah, a few weeks ago there was the shelf porn from a guy’s classroom. I too am a teacher, and I’ve been building a better comic library, so I copied the link and shared it with some co-workers, one of whom was afraid to open it because of the title. That being said, I do like the title “Shelf Porn,” but “Shelf Candy” isn’t bad either.

Man… I knew I had a lot of stuff, but I don’t think it really set in to my brain until I viewed it on someone’s blog.

I want to say I agree with ‘shelf porn’ being a bit misleading. haha. Self Candy is good.

Any title change would be good with me – ‘porn’ is so attention-seeking, might as well call the entries Send Us Your Shelf Drugs.

Thank you for the suggestion. However, we’ve been running the feature for nearly 1 1/2 years now, and don’t have plans to change its name.

Pity . . . as I said, the name put me off reading it for that long. It’s the sort of thing Wizard would come up with.

If you Google the phrase “shelf porn,” you’ll see that it’s a fairly commonly used expression in reference to photos of bookshelves and collections (see also “space porn,” “food porn,” “gear porn,” et al).
However, I don’t know Wizard’s stance on the term.
