Police in Zephyrhills, Florida, have charged Stephen Perry’s roommate in the May murder of the ThunderCats writer.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that 45-year-old James William Davis, who had been identified as “a person of interest,” was arrested today on a charge of first-degree murder. He has been in Pasco County Jail since May 21, when he was arrested on unrelated drug charges.

Perry’s van was discovered on May 16 at a Tampa motel, reportedly near a severed arm. More remains were found in a dumpster at a gas station two miles from his ransacked home. James Davis and his wife Roxanne Davis, 49, were missing as well. However, police later arrested the couple on unrelated charges. Last month, a torso also was discovered and identified as Perry’s.

According to the Times, Perry’s death is still being investigated, and Roxanne Davis has not been ruled out as a suspect.

Perry, 56, suffered from bladder cancer and had been jobless, without health care and, for a time, forced to live in his van with his 5-year-old son Leo. Over the last eight months of his life he received assistance from the Hero Initiative, which helped him to line up work and pay rent, utilities and medical bills.

Perry was best known for his work on the mid-1980s animated series ThunderCats and SilverHawks, both developed by Rankin/Bass. However, he also wrote comics like Timespirits and Psi-Force for Marvel and Wally Wood’s THUNDER Agents for Deluxe.

Yeah, pretty much what I figured would happen. Despite living through the OJ Simpson trial, I usually wait til all the facts are in, but I’m gonna jump the gun here and say I hope this fucker rots.

sadlly i figured that sooner or later the cops would charge the room mates with steve’s murder. hope they both wind up frying or get locked up and never released.

Pretty fuckin gruesome. So far, without a motive being revealed, it just seems like Perry got hacked to pieces for what? Shits-and-giggles?

I’m guessing the motive is most likely drug related.

Justice must be served in this matter, the LORD OF THE THUNDERCATS DEMANDS IT!

Okay seriously though Thundercats references aside, I really hope the guilty in this receive maximum punishment or are taken outside and given the same treatment they gave to Stephen Perry.

“Perry, 56, suffered from bladder cancer… without health care…”

Stuff like this makes me sick. If he had lived in Canada or elsewhere with Universal Health-care, his bladder cancer would have been treated and would most likely still be alive today for that alone. He probably wouldn’t have needed to take in a psycho roommate.

My father in-law was treated for bladder cancer (he was 75 at the time) and now he is 80 and alive and in better health than ever.

That’s where the (admittedly slim) facts we knew up until now pointed. I’m glad there’s news, at least — the police have been very professional and methodical in this, and not given out information until the facts were in; it’s very reassuring that they’re doing their job but it must have been agony on his family and friends going weeks without news.

Just to try and tamp down some of the more bloodthirsty comments: the man is innocent until proven guilty. I think he did it and I think he should spend the rest of his life in a cell, but I don’t have all the facts of the case. It’s up to the jury now.

This is a horrifying story, but reading it left me with a more pressing question: where is the son? If Mr. Perry had custody of him even while homeless, I am concerned about who his current guardian is and his overall welfare. What happened to Mr. Perry is truly awful, but I hope his son is in a safe, nurturing environment.

The son, 5-year-old Leo, is with his mother.

From what was made public of Leo’s mother, that doesn’t really make me feel better. Of course, this was only Steve Perry’s side of the story, but ugh. The whole thing is a tragic mess.

Wasn’t there mention of a lottery ticket as well? The gruesome nature of this crime goes beyond words. There must have been money or drugs involved if it came down to this. In any case, if these two are found guilty they deserve nothing less than the maximum punishment, which will still pale in comparison to the fate that befell poor Steve.

People normally don’t hack people up over drugs. There’s a knife or gunplay involved, but the brutality leads me to believe this story is deeper than it appears. Or maybe they were just unstable people who did a horrible thing to some one because they could. Humanity is truly a flawed experiment.

Hey is absolutely awful about Steve..Leo is with me and Krystal and we are taking good care of him..his Sister Maggie is due any day now..James Davis will eventually rot too.

I agree with all of you – I hope that piece of bat guano James W. Davis rots in jail.

Americas healthcare is a joke, a 56 year old man with bladder cancer and a 5 year old son cant get treatment?? FOR FUCKS SAKE WHY? thoughts and prayers to his little boy

Why, Reikei? Because far too many Americans vote against their own economic self-interests. That’s why. Yeah, it’s more complicated than that… But that’s a big part of it. Wedge issues like “family values,” (as though the far right are the only people with families to care for) not to mention gay marriage or abortion rights, are used to rile up votes who aren’t looking at the bigger picture.

Now I’ll be the first to admit that Obama’s health care “reform” was actually pretty much toothless and didn’t go nearly far enough. He caved pretty much from the beginning of his term, all in the name of “bi-partisanship” and the other side wasted no time running all over him. All this ridiculous “death panel” talk and the like… That was all a big lie. Obama needed to spend the political capital he had after winning the election and push a single-payer system, much like Canada’s through right from the start and he needed to be ready to hit back hard against any attacks to that plan.

He didn’t do that, and people like Stephen Perry, and his young child, are the ones suffering for it. I’m not saying this is all the current president’s fault. The American health care system was a sick joke long before Obama took office. People need to pay attention, think for themselves, and not just be swayed by talking heads and sound bites. Otherwise, problems like this one are never going to go away.

Sorry for ranting, and sorry to anyone who disagrees wih me (that’s your right). Reading about this infuriated me, however, and I needed to get that out there.
