Waid Assembles Big Stories for "All-New All-Different Avengers"
Word started spreading through the San Diego Comic-Con late last night like the movie-buzz equivalent of the Anti-Life Equation: Grant Morrison is writing an independent horror/thriller/psychedelic/god-knows-what film called Sinatoro. Music video director Adam Egypt Mortimer is slated to direct. With Morrison’s spotlight panel underway at the moment I’m sure more info is to come, but for now, you can find the press release below…
Award-winning comic book writer Grant Morrison has signed on to write SINATORO, an original, psychedelic revenge thriller for ZDONK, a production company that connects talented filmmakers directly with their fans. Music video director Adam Egypt Mortimer is attached to direct the project with ZDONK set to produce.
Grant Morrison is widely considered one of the world’s most imaginative and innovative storytelling minds, having re-launched some of the biggest titles at Marvel and DC Comics, including BATMAN, SUPERMAN, X-MEN, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA & FANTASTIC FOUR.
“Adam and I have been planning to work together for years,” says Morrison, “and when ZDONK enthusiastically outlined this amazing, progressive approach to making low-budget, high-creativity pictures, I couldn’t wait to get involved. Luckily, we’d already been talking about SINATORO, a hallucinatory road-trip into the American psyche, and it evolved into a unique and genre-busting project, worthy, we hope, of a new way of thinking about movies.”
The ZDONK model of film production allows the audience to get involved at the roots of the creative process and gives them a chance to watch as the film comes to life on its journey from script to screen. According to Morrison, “With ZDONK, SINATORO will be more than just a movie. It will be a love story, a cult, a philosophy, an ongoing participatory party that starts long before a picture hits the screen and lasts far beyond the final credits. I’m very excited to help create the first of a new kind of picture for the 21st century.”
The film tells the story of Sinatoro, a man with no past and no memories; the sole survivor of a car crash in the middle of a desolate American desert road. When he encounters the beautiful daughter of a cult leader, she convinces him to help defeat the forces of evil, which have overrun her town. His journey pits him against the world’s most dangerous gangster and allies him with a deranged astronaut, a drunken cowboy, and an army of hobos. As Sinatoro travels through an American landscape made of pop culture nightmares, he struggles to understand who he is and why everyone is out to get him.
Morrison is currently the best-selling Batman writer at DC comics and a story consultant for Warner Brothers’ superhero and genre films divisions. His non-fiction book Supergods will be published by Random House in 2011. Mortimer is also attached to direct CHUPACABRA, a ZDONK production based on the famous Latin American myth.
