DC superhero and Oz drinking glasses recalled over lead levels
A Utah company has recalled drinking glasses featuring DC Comics superheroes and Wizard of Oz characters after independent testing revealed they contain high levels of lead. Federal regulators have begun an investigation.
The tests, commissioned by The Associated Press, found the glasses contained lead up to 1,000 times the federal limit for children’s products, as well as lesser amounts of the more-toxic heavy metal cadmium. The AP purchased the China-made glasses from Warner Brothers Studios store in Burbank, Calif.
The central issue may be whether the glasses are intended for children or for adults. Salt Lake City-based importer Vandor contends the products are targeted to adult collectors and passed testing for lead. However, a spokesman for the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission told The AP the agency considers the glasses to be children’s products, which are subject to more strict lead limits. The CPSC is collecting samples for its own testing.
In a press release announcing the voluntary recall, Vandor said that less than 10,000 sets of each item have been shipped since their January release.

I received some Marvel glasses from Target over the weekend. Probably the same deal.
Is the lead and cadmium in the GLASS or in the GRAPHIC? The articles aren’t clear.

I’ve had these on my wishlist for awhile, I am so let down. As of for the debate of if these are for children or adults, I could see someone getting the regular sized ones for kids but there was a set of matching shot glasses…those too were on my list. D:

Oh, please. When I was a kid we played with toys MADE OF LEAD. Trace amounts of lead from the paint on the outside of a glass are not going to hurt anyone. You’d have to eat them to feel any effect. We really need to unclench.

Dang, that headline made me think my dream of a set of Chris Keller, Vern Schillinger and Tobias Beecher tumblers was one step closer to reality.

I’m glad to finally see a picture of these. My regular beer glasses are some DC glasses from the WB Store I got in 2000, and I was worried I had 10 years of lead build-up to undo.

I mean, i love Jose-Luis Garcia-Lopez.
But seriously, he did those drawings in the 80s and they’re still used on merchandise. I want to see some new images.

McDonalds recently had a similar problem with Shrek glasses, and I remember recalled McDonalds character glasses (Ronald, Grimace, Mayor McCheese, etc) from maybe 30 years ago, when I was a little kid. How the hell do these things keep getting made with lead paint? I guess I wouldn’t trust any of those glasses, ever. Makes you wonder how many household items aren’t being checked properly either.
