Send Us Your Shelf Porn!

No new comics in the United States today? Well, that’s ok … because we still have some Shelf Porn for you. Today’s Shelf Porn comes from Graham Apperly, who lives in England and shows us his library of graphic novels and collection of wargame miniatures.

If you’d like to contribute to Shelf Porn, it’s easy — just send your photos and write-up to jkparkin@yahoo.com. Also, if you’re decorating for the holidays and using any sort of comic book theme on your tree or around the house, we want to see those too! So take some photos and send them to me.

And now here’s Graham …

*****

Hi, my name is Graham Apperley and I live in the heart of England in the UK. I have been a collector of many things during my 53 years on Earth and American comic books have always been there to varying degrees. I bought DC comics as a kid in the 1960’s, didn’t ‘get’ Marvel at all and whilst I later became an avid collector, it’s the old DC characters that I find myself drawn back to now. Once a DC boy always a DC boy, I guess.

I have acquired and then sold my comic collections three times and I am now firmly sworn off the floppies and there will not be a fourth collection. Why do I need those anyway, when I can spend my kid’s inheritance on hardback collections of old American comic books!

Anyway, onto my room. In the middle of my room is a 6’ by 4’ wargames table as I am a lifelong tabletop miniature wargamer. Unfortunately the table was covered with ‘stuff’ at the time of taking the photo’s so I’ve carefully avoided it in the photos. Never the less my obsession with wargaming and the Games Workshop miniatures game WH40k will be self evident as we go round the room.

The first photo is looking down the left hand side of the room from the entrance. The billy bookcases down that side of the room hold my hardback comic book collection, other favourite books and my collection of cds. In the next few photo’s you can see my Marvel stuff together with my English newspaper strip cartoon books….Beau Peep, The Perishers (British Peanuts) and the cartoons by Giles. Love them all.

My musical tastes are quite broad from alternative country to Sun Ra, but Jazz is my current preoccupation, particularly Coltrane and Sun Ra.

In the gap between the cases is my set of library steps my wife bought for me which betray my ultimate ambition of a ‘proper’ library, with wing backed leather chair, open fire and a whiskey decanter…..oh and lots of books!

To the left of the stairs are my DC archives, Absolutes etc together with my complete collection of 1st editions by my favourite authors, the hilarious and utterly eccentric creator of ‘far fetched fiction’ Mr Robert Rankin, and Jonathan Carroll, the writer of surreal and very scary stories. Both come highly recommended!

Turning now past my desk and computer we come to another wall of Billy bookcases which house my collection of wargame figures, scenery pieces and trophies.

At the far end is another small bookcase which houses some comic book overspill. above which is my only piece of original comic book art, a page from issue 7 of the delightful Justice League International by Maguire. Not worth much I’m sure but I love it and it was a gift from a close friend many years ago.

Well that’s about it. Hope you enjoyed the tour of my little private den. I hope this won’t be the last to feature as I certainly enjoy seeing other people’s worlds.

Those are some nice looking bookshelves, my friend.

I have to say, organizing my books in reading order doesn’t keep them nearly as orderly looking.

looks great, very neat and organized. good work

Oh my, I’ve come over all a-flutter …

I was sitting back generally in awe of this until POW, Micah P. Hinson poster brought it all together. You are actually me from the future, sent back to collect awesome first editions, aren’t you .. sneaky

If you only have one page of original art, that’s a great choice!

That is a mega collection of miniatures! (Had to.)

Real nice!

The books are nice and all, but that little spiral staircase is awesome.

Where did you get those stairs Graham? I’ve been looking for exactly this for the past couple of years without any luck.

Hi to everyone, sorry for not replying, I’ve been away on business.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Micah P. Hinson……top, top man, seen him live several times….always great and I got the poster signed at that gig. How kind is it of venues to blue tac up cool posters for us to rip down and get signed as souveniers !

As for the little set of library steps… yes I fell in love with them the moment I saw them. It was 6 or 7 years ago now in a small furniture shop in a local town. The shop isn’t in business anymore and there’s no makers name on them …sorry . I’m sure someone somewhere in this big world must make something similar though….internet search…..wooden library steps?

The Rankins are missing The Japanese Devil Fish Girl! I call shenanigans!
