2011 Will Eisner Award nominees announced

Eisner Awards

DC Comics, Mike Mignola and Return of the Dapper Men top the list of nominees for the 23rd annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, which were announced today by Comic-Con International and are presented every July in San Diego.

Dapper Men, by Jim McCann and Janet Lee, received five nominations, including best writer, best painter/multimedia artist and best graphic album. Other comics that received multiple nominations include Morning Glories, Locke & Key, Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys, Chew, Wilson and Hellboy. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola received five nominations, while Nick Spencer (Morning Glories) and Joe Hill (Locke & Key) each received four.

DC Comics and its various imprints received 14 nominations, plus three that were shared with other publishers, with Vertigo books receiving the majority of those. Both IDW and Image received 12 each. Fantagraphics and Drawn & Quarterly both received 11, Dark Horse received nine plus two shared, Archaia received nine, VIZ received four, Marvel received three, plus two shared ones.

The 2011 Eisner Awards judging panel consists of comics store rep John Berry (Metropolis Comics, Bellflower, California), Comic-Con board of director Ned Cato (, librarian Karen Green (Columbia University), comics writer/editor Andy Helfer (The Shadow; Paradox Press), publishing consultant Rich Johnson (previously with DC Comics and Yen Press), and retail manager Chris Powell (Lone Star Comics, Dallas, Texas). Ballots with this year’s nominees will be going out in mid-April to comics creators, editors, publishers, and retailers.

I cannot take this seriously.

Duncan the Wonder Dog getting shut out is the biggest shock for me, and kinda throws the whole thing in a bad light, frankly.

Before the annual pile-on begins in earnest (there is never going to be a ballot for an award ceremony where you agree with it 100%, and the second you have more than one person’s input creating a ballot it’s going to automatically make no one completely happy), I think that — like with most years — there are a lot of excellent comics on the ballot. If there are ones you’ve never heard of, seriously, time to use this as a shopping list. Just about every single one on here is at a minimum, quite good.

And as for the few I don’t recognize? Well, time for me to get around to trying them out…

I guess hype does get you awards. I am pretty amazed at how well Return of the Dapper Men has done. That was one of the ugliest, most coyingly pieces of treacle I have ever had the misfortune of reading. Its a damn shame when books like Stokoe’s infectious Orc Stain or Ware’s continuously superb Acme Novelty Library get snubbed in favor of such crap. Not saying I don’t agree with the whole list. There’s a lot of great deserving stuff. I just wish Dapper Men wasn’t on it.

How is acme novelty library nominated for colors and letters but not for best issue. This was the best thing I read all year.

Also- if there’s a best digital there should be best mini-comic. Please.

How surprising, there is very few Marvel comics nominated. While there have been wins by Marvel writers in recent years, but the Eisner awards always have this anti-Marvel bias. At same time they love to kiss the ass of DC. It seems just because it’s a Vertigo comic, it’s automatically nominated.

@zachary Normally, I’m one of those ‘awards don’t mean anything/you can’t judge art/it’s ludicrous to compare and contrast different types of stories/blahblahblah,’ but yes–Duncan the Wonder Dog was fantastic and I say this having read four out of the five graphic novel nominees. (Off to find Finding Frank…)

As for the concerns about the lack of nominations for licensed or corporate titles, I remember reading a great analogy about how worrying that a Marvel title wasn’t up for an award was kind of like being shocked a Star-Wars-universe-based book didn’t win the Hugo…

I’d love for there to be a best mini-comic/zine award. That’d be awesome.
