Nominees announced for 2011 Harvey Awards
Harvey Awards
The nominees have been announced for the 2011 Harvey Awards, which recognize outstanding work in comics and sequential art.
Named in honor of the late Harvey Kurtzman, the cartoonist and founding editor of MAD magazine, the awards are selected entirely by creators. Final ballots are due by Aug. 6. Winners will be announced in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con, which runs Aug. 20-21. Scott Kurtz will again serve as master of ceremonies.

Fialkov with 4 nominations including best writer! (if I counted correctly.) While I haven’t read his work I’m now even more excited for “I, Vampire”. Glad to see DC giving promising new talent a shot.

Ridiculous list. I own a comic book store and if these titles are that good, why doesn’t anyone want to read them? These awards are forgetting who the majority of fans in comics are, and what they like.

Perhaps the assessment of the best in the field isn’t necessarily wholly contiguous with commercial or popular appeal. I’m not sure that the Harveys see concurring with “the majority of fans in comics…and what they like” as part of their mandate. Nor should they. I, for one, *do* want to read many of these titles.

Glad to see that the Harveys are less mainstream than in recent years. Also can say that for once I have read a good deal of the books nominated, and all are noteworthy to some degree (especially Daytripper).
I wonder if there is any chance Marvel will be shamed into reviving Landridge’s Thor series. It remains the only Thor comic I ever really liked.

Also, when comics are involved, artist is cartoonist, and vice versa.
Still, I’m really miffed that Ian Boothby got the shaft. That comic was fantastic, and the only thing Groening did was give the OK.
Also, the “real” comic fans are just generally superhero fans, and the actual real fans are ones that understand what the medium can do. Acme #20 is an exceptional piece of work, and as a comic book store owner, or a “fan,” you should be ashamed to think it is undeserving.

Thanks for the support Mr. Pants but I’ve got no problem with the credit. It’s how the book is listed on Amazon and most web sites. I’m not at all “shafted” and neither is James Lloyd, the artist on the book.
The good thing about awards like the Harveys and Eisners is that maybe people will check out the work. Hope they do. Lot of good stuff on this list.

I’m happy with most of the nominees but The Gutters? 6 nominations? Really? And especially considering the link that Captain ManIron posted?
In any case, I’m really happy that the nominees are less mainstream than the Eisners – hopefully it’ll lead to more interest and greater sales for these comics

The Harveys are frequent victims to ballet stuffing. Due to the lack of real interest in putting up nominees (and the compounded general lack of interest in comics entirely), virtually anyone with four friends can end up on the list, hence every year some enterprising young soul gets WAY too many nominations and what they did becomes obvious.
It makes the Harveys a bit of a joke, frankly, but these people never actually win, so there’s that.
