Archie co-CEO accuses company of smear campaign

Nancy Silberkleit

Archie Comics Co-CEO Nancy Silberkleit claims the company’s lawsuit against her is merely “a thinly veneered attempt to smear my name and gain complete corporate control” for her counterpart Jon Goldwater.

The lawsuit, filed early last month, accuses Silberkleit of bullying and sexually harassing employees, and sought to bar her from the publisher’s Mamaroneck, N.Y., headquarters and from representing the company at Comic-Con International. A judge allowed her to return to work and attend the San Diego convention, but she’s not permitted to talk to vendors.

According to Archie, Silberklet’s “offensive” behavior dates back to 2009, when she stepped into the co-CEO role following the death of her husband Michael Silberkleit, son of co-founder Louis Silberkleit. In one incident, she allegedly interrupted a meeting and pointed to each of the four men in the room, shouting “PENIS, PENIS, PENIS, PENIS.” In another, she reportedly complained that her “balls hurt.” Another employee asserts he heard Silberkleit say, “All you penises think you can run me out.”

The company contends it hired an outside firm to investigate employee allegations of Silberkleit’s actions, and was advised to cut ties with her.

However, The Journal News reports that Silberkleit denies the allegations and claims that Goldwater, son of Archie Comics co-founder John L. Goldwater, is a chauvinist who’s attempting to drive her out of the company.

“He has called me ‘stupid,’ a ‘moron,’ and ‘despicable,’” the former art teacher said in an affidavit filed last week. “In the presence of others he has told me to ‘shut up’ and ‘why can’t you be sweet, nice and quiet like a lady?’ ”

She accuses Goldwater of making corporate decisions without her, canceling a children’s literacy tour without telling her, and turning employees against her. “Mr. Goldwater long ago and repeatedly has told some employees and also people within the industry that he would get rid of me one way or the other,” Silberkleit wrote.

Her attorney has filed a motion to dismiss the company’s lawsuit. A hearing is set for Aug. 16 in New York Supreme Court in Manhattan.

“she allegedly interrupted a meeting and pointed to each of the four men in the room, shouting ‘PENIS, PENIS, PENIS, PENIS.’”

That’s frowned upon in “corporate America?” I open with that line at most meetings.

I’m just glad she make more money than me,God bless Amerikkka.

“All you penises think you can run me out.”

Sounds like another day at the office to me. I say that to my bosses all the time.

What a total disgrace this company has become under Jon Goldwater. The best thing that could happen to Archie would be for them to get bought out by a big corporation like Viacom or News Corporation and turf both Goldwater and Silberkleit out for good.

This is an idiotic lawsuit. Criticising (however brusquely) a sexist and phallocentric corporate culture is not ‘sexual harrassment’. Those poor liddle penises.

“In another, she reportedly complained that her “balls hurt.” ”

Clearly, she’s in the wrong line of work then.

I’ve had a hectic, sometimes infuriating week at my job this week. I might go with the “my balls hurt” line tomorrow and see if they let me go home early to nurse them. Ice ‘em down or something.

“The best thing that could happen to Archie would be for them to get bought out by a big corporation like Viacom or News Corporation and turf both Goldwater and Silberkleit out for good.”

Yeah! News Corp’s a shining beacon of integrity. Definitely the kind of company needed to clean up the corruption and foul play over at Archie.

Oh… Wait…

Do you even follow the news? Not Fox “News,” I mean real news.

I don’t mean to sound unsympathetic or anything… I get the feeling Goldwater and Siberkleit are probably creeps. But I don’t know that all the “penis” talk or referencing her “balls” (definitely more info than I needed) is really winning her any points here.

Wait… I’m not sure why I typed “and Silberkleit” just now… I really just meant to reference Goldwater. I guess I was thinking that the company would be better off without either of them, got my thoughts jumbled up a bit, and didn’t communicate that well.

Not that lady talking about her achy balls is really mastering the art of communication either, but still.

OK, I’m done now.

Whether any of this is true or not, this is one of the funniest stories I’ve read today. If I ever work for a corporation, I’ll probably start our meetings out with yelling “PENIS” also.
Seriously, if this is true about Ms. Silberkleit, then she’s clearly deranged in a hilarious way, and if it’s true that these are false allegations on the part of Archie comics, get them started on some PG-13 or R rated material.

How come she’s still the derranged one? Why aren’t her accusations of Goldwater’s sexism not brought up into discussion? Why isn’t he even remotely considered at fault?

Frankly, I’m not surprised at anything she mentions. Her doing the same thing a guy would do and be chastised for it is a sad thing that still happens. The evidence is just as apparent in this thread.
