BOOM! to publish monthly Peanuts comic

Their Disney comics may be all but gone — and they will be gone after October — but BOOM! Studios’ kids line, kaboom!, isn’t going away. Joining Snarked!, Wordgirl and the other post-Disney era of kid’s comics from the company will be an ongoing Peanuts series.

The book follows BOOM!’s Happiness Is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown, a graphic novel adaptation of the TV special by the same name. They’ll kick it off with a $1 “zero” issue this November, and the regular series will kick off in January.

“It’s a daunting task to follow in the footsteps of a master,” BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon said in a press release. “But with the team we have assembled and the guidance of the folks at Peanuts Worldwide and Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, we’re confident that we’ll be delivering to fans the best Peanuts monthly comic book series anyone could imagine.”

Unfortunately the press release makes no mention of the “team” they have assembled to work on the comic. It does note that these will be new, original stories, rather than reprints of any previous Peanuts material. You can find the release after the jump.

August 24th, 2011 – Los Angeles, CA – Happiness is a monthly comic book series, Charlie Brown! PEANUTS debuted at BOOM! Studios’ all-ages imprint KABOOM! this past spring with the first PEANUTS graphic novel HAPPINESS IS A WARM BLANKET, CHARLIE BROWN. Now, thanks to a recently signed partnership with Peanuts Worldwide, Snoopy and the gang are back in a monthly comic book series kicking off this November with a special #0 — for only a buck —featuring a new original story and supplementary material that will provide a sneak peek at the series launching in January!

“We were honored to publish the first PEANUTS graphic novel HAPPINESS IS A WARM BLANKET, CHARLIE BROWN this past spring and now we are doubly honored to publish a new PEANUTS monthly comic series,” BOOM! Studios Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ross Richie said. “The team at PEANUTS have entrusted us with these characters and we aim to do everything we can to honor the memory and the characters of Charles Schulz.”

Launched this past spring, KABOOM! is the brand new name for BOOM! Studios’ three year old all-ages imprint previously known as BOOM Kids! This year has seen KABOOM! launch with the premiere of the PEANUTS graphic novel, followed closely by an all new original series by fan-favorite Roger Langridge entitled SNARKED, and this month will see the release of Scholastic’s WORDGIRL.

Oh God. This is like… Like someone else picking up Calvin and Hobbes when Watterson eventually passes on. It isn’t necessary at all. There’s like, ten volumes of Classic Peanuts out there that this cannot possibly compare to. Moreover, why are they using the title that Schulz famously hated? Why not a title like some of the older volumes I have, something like ‘This Is Your Life, Charlie Brown’ or something along those lines?

my first reaction is to agree w/ Statham, this is usually the kind of money grab I hate.
Schulz did let other people work on his characters though–outside of the daily strip, esp. the movies.

If this were a Disney level company, I wouldn’t give it a second look–the house of mouse may do an okay job of protecting their own mascots, but they uniformly bungle the properties they buy, draining them as cash cows–but BOOM has shown a real knack for supporting “labors of love”.

As a smaller publisher, they can’t afford to bungle projects that’re as high profile as this, and I think the company works to take on projects they have a real love for more often then not.
I’ll watch it with a wary eye, but if something good comes of it, then good for them and for us.

OK Statham, you don’t like it and you see it as a money grab. But what comics aren’t a money grab, have you checked the prices lately? Ultimately the new Peanuts comics are NOT FOR YOU. It’s for kids. I’ve read in previous articles that ‘Schulz’ are trying to win back a younger audience and reintroduce Peanuts to kids and generate new fans. You and other frowning super-fans have got to be able to let go of the exclusivity of what you loved in your childhood and learn to share.
How does having new Peanuts comics actually harm you to the point of causing you to write an inflammatory post? I don’t get it. You haven’t even seen the comic book yet- actually, it’s probably better that you don’t because you’ve already decided that it’s a bad thing to have in the world.
I’ll assume you’re one of the people who HATE the new Loony Tunes. I love the old Loony Tunes too but my kids LOVE the new ones and the old ones. They’re happy when they watch the new Loony Tunes.That’s not a bad thing at all. Maybe you don’t have kids, I do and I hope these comics cause them to fall in love with the Peanuts kids the way I did back in the late 60′s.
You really must open up your mind and learn to share.

The comic is titled “Peanuts”. While Schulz hated that title, he learned to deal with it… I think the millions (billions) of dollars from licensing helped.

If you refer to “Warm Blanket”, that is taken from a book which Schulz approved, and ties into the animated special which was released last Spring.

Schulz did approve comics created by other artists, most specifically the Dell Comics. Now, it’s the family, which owns Peanuts completely, which is running the show. This is about as good as it gets. Unless you feel there should be NO new material (licensed or otherwise, since it would not be approved by Schulz himself). Perhaps you are of the internet cabal which feels that the artist’s estate are leeches sucking the wonderfulness from an artform. In which case, I suggest you immediately stop buying any and all Peanuts merchandise, even the Fantagraphics books, as that money will go to the estate.

What about the specials which Schulz did approve, with art by others? Are those part of your canon? What about the later strips which used a computer font, since Schulz could no longer hand-letter the strip? What of the screens used for shading?

I just think it’s interesting that they put Schulz’s name at the top of the cover, and apparently use Schulz artwork on the cover, but make no mention at all of who is involved in the actual insides of the book. Almost like they’re trying to hide something.

I’m also not sure who they’re hoping ot reach with this book. I give it a year, tops. I’m not wishing failure on it, but I also have no interest in paying to read Peantus stories that were not from Mr. Schulz. I have a feeling many will feel the same way. But if it can find an audience, and if it’s reasonably good, then so be it.

I think putting Charles M. Schulz’s name at the top is much in the tradition of putting Walt Disney’s name at the top of the Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck comics. Walt didn’t draw them, but his name appears on each book because they are his creations.

That said, I won’t pass judgment until I get the chance to read the book myself. “Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown” was a fun and well-drawn book (a few flaws here and there in the pacing, but enjoyable).

I think it should’ve been called ‘Charlie Brown’ rather than ‘Peanuts’ in which Schulz disliked the title we had now, When everyone’s a big fan of the 1950-1970 era of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang in the old times, then you will love seeing them back into their 1960s roots the way it is and of course Boom Comics publishing their monthly Peanuts comics has just starting the final countdown.

This is nothing new. Hundreds of books have been illustrated and written by other artists during Schulz’s lifetime and since his passing. Just look at Amazon.com for proof of that. Many of the artists are even credited. Schulz approved comic books written and drawn by other artists in the 50s and 60s. Hundreds of animators worked on the animated specials. Schulz had no problem using ghost artists for all of his merchandising art throughout his lifetime.

What people seem to be confusing here are comic STRIPS with comic BOOKS. The strip has always been Schulz’s domain %100. Everything else (comic books, merchandising, children’s books, animation) has always been somebody else.

Schulz always was involved in every aspect of peanuts, whether it be comic books or the animations and in many cases he wrote the scripts for the animated specials. NO new peanuts material should be written, that is my view, if you disagree with it fair enough but it does seem that the people who are in favour of this comic book are being more inflammatory than the people who are not in favour of it

One of the last things Shultz asked of his family is that no one be allowed to draw his strip after he died. They apparently lied to him and agreed!!! And Boom/kaboom is showing the integrity of their leadership by printing this series against the original artist’s wishes. Such an insult to so great an artist sullies their entire line!
