First look at Batman: Earth One cover

Batman: Earth One

The listing and cover art appeared this morning on Amazon.com for Batman: Earth One, the long-awaited DC Comics graphic novel by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank.

Announced in December 2009 along with the bestselling Superman: Earth One by J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis, Batman: Earth One takes Bruce Wayne back to Crime Alley, where tragedy set him on the path to become the world’s greatest detective. Both graphic novels were originally set to debut in 2010, but obviously only Superman hit that target date. Batman is listed for release on May 8, 2012 (not necessarily set in stone), a little more than two months before the opening of The Dark Knight Rises. Here’s the Amazon description:

Geoff Johns, the writer of BLACKEST NIGHT, GREEN LANTERN and INFINITE CRISIS re-teams with superstar artist Gary Frank, his collaborator on SUPERMAN: SECRET ORIGIN, SUPERMAN:BRAINIAC and SUPERMAN & THE LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES, to create this original graphic novel that gives new insight into Bruce Wayne’s transformation into Batman and his first year as The Dark Knight. This follow-up to the # 1 New York Times bestseller, SUPERMAN: EARTH ONE, by J. Michael Straczynski and Shane Davis is the latest in the series that features the industry’s top writers and illustrators and their unique takes on DC’s characters. It’s the perfect book for new readers of graphic novels as well as longtime comic book fans.

And yet, this is not the origin for the DCnU Batman, right?

Seems like this will be the first major graphic novel release of the post-Flashpoint DC Entertainment, too. If all their monthly comics are day-and-date, I wonder if we’ll see a digital Batman Earth One at the same time (and/or a digital Superman Earth One to boot).

I believe that’s correct, Josh; Batman Earth One would stand on its own. Since we know Superman Earth One isn’t the origin of the DC Relaunch Superman, it’s unlikely the Batman book would be either.

Terrible cover.

I bet Bruce Wayne wears a Hood at some point, to appeal to the ghetto demographic.

I can’t wait for this. I loved Earth One, I seriously loaned it out to all my friends who thought Superman was outdated and they all redacted that statement after reading it. I really hope JMS can keep it up and hopefully release them closer together than years apart!

“The ghetto demographic”

Are you serious? You think that eveyone that wears a hood is ‘ghetto’?

I’m excited to read this. I loved Superman Earth One. Hopefully, this one will be equally as enjoyable.

Or worse. See London.

mckracken, that’s silly. You must not live in a place where it ever rains or gets cold.

Eh…this seems kinda pointless to me. I would’ve rather had Gary Frank draw something from the DCnU. Then again, if they’re releasing this before Dark Knight Rises, i guess this could potentially be a huge seller, better than Superman Earth One.

“bet Bruce Wayne wears a Hood at some point, to appeal to the ghetto demographic.” That’s funny! Cover might be a little weak, but this is a definite. Johns&Frank’s Superman stuff is what brought me back to the character’s books after YEARS of being away (did get Busiek/Pacheco’s run, that’s it). Love GARY FRANK!

I wasn’t blown away by Superman: Earth One. it was okay, but it wasn’t amazing. I have similar expectations on this one, but I’ll get it and try it.

I think the cover looks cool. Hopefully this will do well, it should since the Superman one was popular and Batman has more of an audience these days.

I think whats great about these books is that anyone, even non-comic collectors can pick this up and its a nice OGN free from continuity. I think thats why the Superman one did so well, regardless of its quality so I expect similar for this one too.

looks cool.

Superman was terrible, but I don’t think this’ll be as bad. I don’t know how well Johns will write Batman, but it’ll at least look much better than Superman.

Why is wanting to sell ($$$) Batman graphic novels free of continuity pointless? There’s like five points in that sentence alone.

I’ve always been interested in seeing what Johns would do with Batman, so I’ll for sure be picking this up.

“I’ve always been interested in seeing what Johns would do with Batman, so I’ll for sure be picking this up.”

This was my first thought when Batman: Earth One was announced I’m really curious about what Johns take of the character.

So these books DO take place out of continuity? Original stories free of all the extraneous stuff in the regular titles makes these worth reading on that alone!

Yeah, they’re in the Earth One continuity. New Earth being the regular continuity, followed by 2 through 51?

Hoping this isn’t another origin retelling. I’ve seen so many of these lately. Can’t deny how much I love Gary Frank, but not Geoff Johns lately. Unless this is from before his popularity explosion, it could be exposition fest.

I really don’t like Geoff Johns on the whole, but his work with Gary Frank has been pretty top-notch.

I will be buying this because GARY FRANK IS GONNA BE DRAWING BATMAN!! (simple as that)

Yeah, Gary Frank is the major draw for me. And the fact its Batman, means we arn’t going to get the freaky looking Superman face! Yay! Although lets hope his Batman doesn’t have an eerie resemblance to Michael Keaton or Christian Bale!

For me, Johns has been alittle off his game lately with Flash and Flashpoint – they just seem to be lacking substance. Lets hope he brings it this time! ;)

OK, I’ll bite… 2012???

Seriously? Originally announced as 2010, but now it’s going to be almost two years late? It looks good, and as a Batman fan who hasn’t been interested in buying most of the Bat-books of the past few years (odd, given how much I loved the Nolan Bat-movies… But then the movies have in no way resembled the recent DCU, thank goodness) I hope this will be an enjoyable read.

But 2012? Leave it to DC to once again not get something out in a reasonable amount of time. Let’s see how long the “New 52″ can stay on schedule.

God damnit, I need this book like NOW!

Somewhat sad the neither Johns or DC spilled the beans on this one during Comic Con. Hopefully NY Comic Con will have something in store about this.

I must admit Earth One Supes was a terrible book. Didn’t like it one bit to be honest , but I’m cautiously optimistic about this one (despite that cover). And forget Batman, I’m more interested in seeing what Johns does with the Batman rogues gallery. I really enjoyed what he did with the Rogues in Flash and with a free hand in the Earth 1 universe it should definitely be interesting.

I’m not sure I really get the point of this. We already have the perfect batman origin story in year one and it’s completely free of continuity and new reader friendly.

They could do a great new story that’s independent and free of continuity. It could still be new reader friendly (I’m sure the percentage of new readers buying this that haven’t seen one of the batman films and have at least a passing familiarity with the character would be approaching zero) but also offer something to long time fans.

Heck even throw in some one page adds for year one (both the comic and the animated version) for those looking to go back to the beginning and some other great standalone stories (e.g. Long Halloween) for those looking for more but who may not want to get into periodicals.

Oh hey Earth One didn’t die on its arse after all. Still doubt we’ll be seeing more of it. Hell, the pace it’s going, I’ll have broken into comics just in time to write JSA: Earth One.

I don’t know why some people have such trouble understanding the concept. It’s called the Ultimate Universe and it’s well over a decade old by now. Not that I’m criticising DC; in fact I think it’s well overdue.

What the hell? I love Gary Frank art but that cover is horrible. That looks like a midget Bruce Wayne even though I know that is him as a child.

Its been too long since their initial announcement.. plus the cover could use a huge make-over. but…. I’m a fan so I will still buy this edition.

@mckracken:
Are you some kind of closeted racist moron? I get so tired of this pathetic racist nonsense. I see hundreds of White guys wearing hoodies and now all of a sudden, anyone that wears a hoodie is “ghetto”?

For the record, most of the looters in London were White, middle class people who were laid off and poor Whites as well. I have friends that live in Tottenham and surrounding areas and they said on the BBC news, that is all you saw. Get it right, d**khead and go study your history to see who is the biggest thug, thief and killers throughout civilization. What you saw, was a reaction.

@mckraken: “I bet Bruce Wayne wears a Hood at some point, to appeal to the ghetto demographic.”

Nah. He’s a Bill Belichik fan. In the DCU, Belichik is the head coach of Gotham’s NFL teams, the Gotham Rogues.

@Godwell Surely equating the word “ghetto” with black people says something about your own perceptions of race

@McCracken:

Ghetto demographic?

You say that like it’s a bad thing

You do know black people do read comics, right? Esp famous black personalities.

@TheCommander: Wrooooonnnnng

Please explain how it’s terrible apart from ‘i don’t like Gary Frank’

None for me, thanks.

While McKracken does come across like a complete tool. And I think he says what he does to get a rise out of people. Ghetto doesn’t mean black – it means poor, povo, from the wrong side of the tracks.. etc.

Having said that, I love hoodies. Hell, I own both Mooks and Calvin Klein hoodies! – which ‘ghetto’ people wouldn’t be able to afford!

“While McKracken does come across like a complete tool. And I think he says what he does to get a rise out of people. Ghetto doesn’t mean black – it means poor, povo, from the wrong side of the tracks.. etc.”

Colloquially, yes, it does mean black.

gary frank should be drawing superman not perez. much respect to perez but his style seems so outdated. I bet gary frank makes superman a definite hit.
