From "The Dick Knight," by Richard Pace
Richard Pace sends up Batman: The Dark Knight Returns in his response to Frank Miller’s recent tirade against Occupy protestors, writing, “I’d prefer to remember Frank Miller as the sometimes brilliant, long-haired nerd glaring from his back-cover photo on The Dark Knight Returns trade rather than the fedora-wearing, incoherent lightweight hack he’s become.”
Read the full comic strip, titled “The Dick Knight,” on Pace’s blog.
Oh no he didn ´t !!
Frank Miller: From talent to tool.
Please. If Mr. Miller said what he did about the Tea Party, everyone would be praising him.
Oh my gosh Frank Miller has an opinion!!!!!!! Lets ridicule him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seems as if it’s the in-thing to make Frank Miller your whipping boy.
Forgive me if I don’t join in.
Frank Miller had Ronald Reagan order Superman to kill Batman.
Not kind of.
Not sort of.
That is exactly what happens in DKR.
Miller has always been outspoken and outrageous.
He has never come off as particularly well informed on socio-political issues.
But, I guess when he is demonizing conservatives in his great works of fiction he is being deep and relevant, but when he rants on something near and dear to liberals, then he is an out-of-touch psycho.
Maybe Mr. Pace should include the Occupier who defecated on a cop car, or scenes of the sexual harassment or rape occuring in the park. What about including the squalor and refuse left behind by the Occupiers?
Not a whipping boy. While I admire his honesty. I think MR Miller knew his highly inflamatory remarks would cause a fire storm. Sure there are some fringe elements in the owt but the fact remains that economic situation has boiling over. I will always love MILLERS work of the past,DK,DAREDEVIL,SIN CITY,MARTHA WASHINGTON. I DONT agree with STEVE DITKO AYN RAND Viewpoint either, still think he is a major talent.
Yeah, let’s get rid of the evil multinational corporations…you know, like Time Warner and Disney.
Hillarious! Kudos to all…
Still convinced this was a last ditch viral marketing effort to save the sales of a book that has a lot of things wrong with it.
With all due respect, that’s because the Tea Party is crazy, racist, and ignorant. Not to say that all members of the OWS movement are omniscient or better people, but their message is about equality for everyone, not dumb redneck slogans like “Don’t Tread on me.”
The difference is that in Dark Knight Returns, Miller was clearly satirizing both the left and the right: it was probably harder on the right simply because a.) the Reagan Administration was in the midst of a number of scandals like Iran-Contra; and b.) Reagan himself was beginning to show early signs of the Alzheimer’s disease that would later claim him. But liberal idealism also took hits: watch his pundits who try to present Gotham’s criminals as the persecuted victims of society (and Batman.)
Miller’s recent work is lacking much in satire– maybe there’s a little of it in Dark Knight Strikes Back but it’s comparitively little sense of it in anything else he’s done in the last decade or more.
So, to paraphrase, the movement you don’t support is objectively wrong, and the movement you do support is objectively right?
I find the responses to Miller to be much more interesting than anything he actually said, to be honest…
Richard Pace has as much creativity as a Michael Bay movie or a Nick Spencer comic.
“Don’t Tread On Me” is hardly a ‘redneck’ slogan. I flag and slogan that was flown in battle during the revolutionary war. Therefore it’s ours altogether (you, me, occupiers, tea partiers, etc.)
The Tea Party and Occupiers have the same core grievances, they just went about the resolution of their grievances in different ways. Tea Partiers got many people elected to office, whereas Occupiers haven’t produced as much, we’ll have to wait and see next year.
It”s one thing to protest, but squating, shitting on cop cars, ‘rioting’ in certain areas, the few counts of sexual assaults and other acts of violence. That is doing nothing to help their cause.
If you really think like that, please inform yourself.
To Deetz, Alemander and other similar comments I’ve read on the net since Miller’s initial posting.
Since when can’t an artist have an opinion on something?
Since when can’t a creative person use their talents to respond to an opinion they may disagree with.
Miller spouts off about something, on his personal blog, that he disagrees with.
Pace responds to his comments with a comic.
Both have points to make.
What’s the big deal?
I’m not going to say which one I agree with or disagree with, because IMO, that’s not the point. The internet has allowed EVERYONE to make their opinions known- to whoever wants to read it.
I think that’s great.
At least Miller and Pace are posting their opinions under their REAL name. They’re not yelling out something, then ducking behind anonymity.
I’ll give Pace a slight nod over Miller because he illustrated his.
“At least Miller and Pace are posting their opinions under their REAL name. They’re not yelling out something, then ducking behind anonymity.”
I wish we had a way of posting this automatically at the top of every single comment thread, on every single post, ever.
I agree Richard!
But all the stuff I’ve read is a personal attack on Miller and NOT of what he said.
“Frank Miller had Ronald Reagan order Superman to kill Batman.
Not kind of.
Not sort of.
That is exactly what happens in DKR.”
No he didn’t. Reagan used a metaphor of breaking a wild horse, saying sometimes you need to ride them around the yard a few times before they respect you (or something like that). But the order was to capture Batman, not kill him.
“With all due respect, that’s because the Tea Party is crazy, racist, and ignorant. Not to say that all members of the OWS movement are omniscient or better people, but their message is about equality for everyone, not dumb redneck slogans like “Don’t Tread on me.”
Wow. I guess tolerance and freedom of speech only apply when it’s something you support.
Wow. Is this a Yahoo! article Comments page?
I guess topics like this only proves to me that right-wing, REP/CON, reactionary Comics Fans who swamp en masse to complain about DemDamnDirtyLibburals [tm] attacking one of their own…
ARE right-wing, REP/CON reactionaries. Who also read Comic books.
Richard Pace, I applaud you! What a fantastic job you did.
Your commentary was amazingly accurate. Your ability to do it in Frank Miller’s own classic style was simply astonishing.
Way to go, man!
