Comics A.M. | Neil Gaiman comments on end of Spawn dispute

Legal | Neil Gaiman comments briefly on the settlement agreement that ends his decade-long legal dispute with Todd McFarlane over Medieval Spawn, Angela and Cogliostro, and a handful of derivative characters: “The main thing is, I feel like an awful lot of good things have come out of it. … I think the various decisions, particularly the [Judge] Posner decision, were huge in terms of what the nature of dual copyright in comics is. What is copyrightable in comics is now something that there is a definite legal precedent for. There were a lot of things that were … misty in copyright [law] that are now much clearer. And it’s of benefit to the creator.”

While the details of the settlement are confidential, it’s known that Gaiman and McFarlane now share ownership of Spawn #9 and #26, as well as the first three issues of an Angela spin-off series. [Comic Riffs]

Susie Cagle

Legal | Cartoonist Susie Cagle, who has been covering the Occupy movement, was arrested again over the weekend and subsequently “unarrested” during protests in Oakland, California. Cagle wrote on Twitter that an Oakland police officer “charged and grabbed my arm, threw me so hard it was numb for 5 minutes.” She said she was also told by an officer her release was a “favor.” [The Daily Cartoonist]

Conventions | Comic-Con International has released its complete special guest list for the 2012 convention, which takes place July 12-15 in San Diego. The list includes Mark Waid, John Romita Jr., James Robinson, the Hernandez Bros., Paul Levitz, Erik Larsen, Jim Lee, Nate Powell and Becky Cloonan, among others. [Comic-Con]

Creators | Writer Jim Zubkavich says that in its first week as a webcomic, Skullkickers had more unique visits “than all three printings of Skullkickers #1 combined.” He says he hopes that “a combination of web page view ad payouts, print comic sales, digital comic sales, trade sales and convention sales will work together to keep the series running strong so I can tell the entire story I have planned.” [Fleen]


Creators | New-media expert Douglas Rushkoff discusses his graphic novel A.D.D., a cautionary tale about the importance of media literacy: “The whole trick in turning something from non-fiction to fiction seems to be less about predicting imaginary scenarios than it is about making the unseen reality visible. So really, what you need to do is come up with visual, identifiable characters and circumstances that depict what’s actually going on in a way that we can see it.” [The Huffington Post]

Creators | Although there is no official word on the topic, speculation is running wild in New Jersey that 19th-century cartoonist Thomas Nast has been denied admission to the New Jersey Hall of Fame for the third year in a row due to objections to his anti-Catholic cartoons and crude caricatures of Irish immigrants. I don’t care about at all about the Spawn dispute, I just want to know when I’m gonna get my Alan Moore Marvelman Omnibus.

So you’re not interested in Gaiman securing the ability to have his material printed in a Marvel Man omnibus, it’s all about Alan Moore? :-p

Whoa, I didn’t say that. Gaiman’s material needs to be finished first, then it can be Omnibbed.

I don’t care about Spawn mostly.

How many comic creators are making a stand like Susie Cagle?

Good for Gaiman. Apparently, McFarlane has forgotten why Image comics was created in the first place — creator rights and ownership. I met him once at a signing, and he seemed arrogant to me.

Cagle – isn’t that a type of exercise??

Funny how McFarlane has turned into a little Marvel. In fact, he, Silvestri, Lee and Liefeld all did with their work-for-hire practices. And how many of their artists share in copyright?

With a couple exceptions (Larsen and Valentino), it looks like most of the Image founders left Marvel so they could become the same kind of IP farm and talent grindhouses they rallied against in the first place.

Yeah, I no longer have any sympathy for Susie Cagle’s experiences at the OWS demonstrations.

How many times does she need to be arrested and/or manhandled until she gets the hint, “hey, maybe its not such a good idea to be hanging around here?”

I could care less about Todd McFarlane. Even less his Spawn.

All I’s care about is seeing Alan Moore/Neil Gaiman’s Marvel/Miracle Man stuff reprinted and resurrected.

Now. You listening Marvel? Get off yer butt and start reprinting!!!!

Beau Smith, who worked with Todd for a number of years, basically wrote the same thing.

For all his good qualities, Todd was unwilling to give up any piece of the pie. Smith pointed out all the great talent that McFarlane had working for him at various points in time, and how Todd’s contracts and way of running his business drove them all away.

Todd was always the most hypocritical of the Image guys. Recall his bullshit excuses defending Image and it’s terribly late books, yet Todd made sure he hired an artist (Greg Capullo) who had a near fanatical dedication to never missing deadlines.

Like some said, Todd left Marvel and formed Image so HE could be the entity reaping all the benefits of others creating characters and stories under his watch.

Those Scientology lawyers of Gaiman’s sure do come in handy. Now he can give even more money to the Super Powers Center to remove body Thetans. After all, he already gave the Scienos half a million in 2010.
