DC is finally collecting Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld
DC Comics has announced it will publish the long-hoped-for collection of its 1980s fantasy property Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld in September — no doubt thanks to the character’s inclusion in Cartoon Network’s upcoming DC Nation programming block.
Created by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn and Ernie Colón, Amethyst debuted in 1983, at a time when DC boasted such fantasy series as Warlord, Arion, Lord of Atlantis, and Arok, Son of Thunder. The initial limited series, subsequent short-lived ongoing and later one-shot and miniseries centered on Amy Winston, a teenager who discovers she’s actually the orphaned princess of Gemworld, a magical realm ruled by the evil Dark Opal. In short, it’s the perfect setup for a children’s fantasy story (although the later issues took on a darker tone than the original miniseries).
The 648-page Showcase Presents: Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld, Vol. 1, collects the character’s first appearance in 1983′s Legion of Super-Heroes #298, the original Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld 12-issue limited series, the subsequent Amethyst Annual #1, the one-shot with Superman in DC Comics Presents #63 and the first 11 issues of the 16-issue ongoing titled simply Amethyst. That leaves the last four issues of the ongoing, the 1986 Amethyst Special and the final four-issue miniseries for another (thin) volume.

I wonder if this means a new Amethyst book is slated.

Cuda B, I wouldn’t be surprised. I remember a lot of people speculating about the possibility of one back when the New 52 launched. If I had to put money on it though I’d guess something more like a “Weird Worlds” anthology book featuring Amethyst, Warlord and others.

This’ll be a Christmas gift for a few of the girls in my family this year.

Issue #11 was the last by Mishkin & Cohn. After that there was a fill-in by Mindy Newell & Colleen Doran, then Kieth Giffen & Robert Fleming took over the writing, starting with a sure-to-be-confusing-out-of-context Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover.

Before we started up Madame Xanadu with Matt Wagner, we tried to get an Amethyst relaunch going at Vertigo with Amy Reeder and a different writer. It didn’t work out–just wasn’t the right time, I guess. But Amethyst is such a great concept with tons of potential.

OMG I can’t wait!! The only original issues I don’t have are numbers 2 and 3 from the final miniseries. Thanks!! Amethyst was my favorite comic.

Brilliant news, though it’s a shame we’re going to miss out on the colour. Still, this is a glass far more than half full.

Great to see that it’s going to the Showcase line. It’s going to be a huge book, so at least it will be affordable for everyone to try out.

Sweet! I loved the original mini as a kid in the 80′s. I’ve never read any of the other stories there except the DCCP story, so I’m looking forward to getting this one.

Interesting news. I can imagine an Amethyst revival, and I can even think of some writers who might be appropriate. I’m curious to see what this will look like in black and white. Color was so much a part of Amethyst (what with the gems and all…), but Ernie’s work was spectacular, and b&w might really show that off. So good news…now I can start shopping for that retirement villa on the Riviera.

A pure dream come true for me!
Amethyst got me reading mainstream comics when I was 6 (I recognized Ernie Colon’s work from the Richie Rich comics & instantly fell for the art in Amethyst!), and it is so fantastic to see her finally getting her due!
This *may* make me forgive DC for the abominations that were the Weirdoverse stories from the 90s & the unfortunate Secret Seven appearance last summer…ugh…

If you hunt around you can usually get the original comics from the back issue bins for 50c a piece. That’s how I collected my run about 6 months ago.

I have all the Amethyst comics, and they’re awesome. I’ll buy this collection to show my support of the character. However, I really wish DC was collecting Amethyst in color. It’s such a beautiful series.

I have the entire Amethyst run too. But I will be buying this to show support for the character. Hopefully, we see her proper return.

YES YES YES YES!
About TIME!
Amethyst is one of fewest characters that always stick with me for years.
Why do you think I got a tattoo of her on my left calf?

I’d be more than happy to shell out $40-$50 for a full-color edition. Hopefully sales of this one will persuade them.

I just bought the new Batman: Knightfall vol 1 reprint; it’s a Showcase-sized phone book, in COLOR, for $30! There’s no reason why the Amethyst book couldn’t be in color as well!
