Shelf Porn Saturday | A prescription for awesomeness

Hello and welcome to Shelf Porn, where we give fans the opportunity to show us their collections, both big and small. And today we have one that falls into the former category, as Bryan Hodgson a soon-to-be pharmacist who shares his collection of graphic novels, statues, original art and more.

If you’d like to see your collection here, drop me a note at jkparkin@yahoo.com. Let’s make it happen!

And now let’s hear from Bryan …

*****

My name is Bryan Hodgson, I am 33 and I have been collecting comics in one form or another for about 20 years. I am a part owner of one of the local comic stores, and I have recently returned to University to pursue a career as a Pharmacist. My wife (Lisa) shares my passion for the hobby and has become quite the enabler when it comes to additions to the collection. As such we have comic or comic-related paraphernalia in nearly every room of our house. I tried to take pictures of everything that we have set up, but I may have missed a few things here and there.

Additionally I do have a large collection of monthly comics (somewhere around 7,000+ issues), but I didn’t include pictures of them because I don’t find large white boxes incredibly interesting. If any of the readers are interested, I can certainly send them some pictures.

I did my best to number the pictures in such a way that it is like a tour around our house. I’ll make a few comments along the way, but for the most part I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. If you have any comments or questions I will be happy to answer them. On to the collection.

Starting upstairs pictures 1 through 9 include what we have on display in our living room, dining room, kitchen and main floor bathroom. The art above the fireplace is by John Cassaday and is my favorite piece in my collection.

Pictures 10-14 follow you as you make your way downstairs to the bulk of the collection. Yes Mario is made out of lego and the alien from Space Invaders is made out of chainmail links.

This is a set of art prints that the SDCC put out in 2006 for the DC comic stamps. I missed grabbing the Marvel ones that were released later so if any of the viewers know where to grab a set I would love to know.

Pictures 16-29 are three of the display cases I have stuffed full of statues and busts. I did my best to arrange each shelf with a theme in mind. Care to take any guesses?

Pictures 30-38 are found within our non-superhero comic room. The Earthworm Jim riding Tommy was a fantastic commission from Doug TenNapel who is one of the humblest comic creators I have met (super-tall too!).

And the remainder (pictures 39-89) are within the main comic room. The anal-retentiveness I put into organizing my collection becomes readily apparent within this room. Books are arranged thusly: DC and Others Absolute, Marvel HC Oversized, DC HC Oversized, Marvel HC, DC HC, Marvel Trades, DC Trades, Independent HCs, Independent Trades and then art books, regular novels and board games. It’s almost a sickness how particular I am with organizing and aligning the books.

As a final statement I would like to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed viewing the other collector’s shelf porn on the website. It is always nice to see collections (large and small) from across the world. Thank you for hosting my collection and thank you for introducing me to so many wonderful collections from other fans.

“WOW!” multiplied by a factor of 100!

Excellent collection layout.

A sword nearby your bed? Expecting someone?

Well done! I don’t know how you afforded it all while saving for school, but you’ve done an incredible job of both collecting and displaying. Great breadth of interests, nicely presented. Kudos. This was one of the best Shelf Porns ever.

Holy cow you must have spent a billion dollars on all that

Amazing. Simply Incredible. The way everything is set up, so meticulous. This person has inspired me with their layout. Truly a great collector.

Dude, thats a comic store in your HOUSE! SO JEALOUS! Have you read all that? Its such a diverse collection. Hope you don’t live near a flood zone or hurricane prone area.

Funny you should mention flood… That did happen to us two summers ago! Sump backed up, AND the comic room window leaked in the same storm. Only a very few were damaged as Bryan caught it quickly, but it took a few friends and many hours moving everything out. >.< I suppose it allowed Bryan to rearrange the collection even better the second time… But I'm sure it wasn't appreciated at the time.

Like Nicholas said, “Wow!”.

Easily one of the best shelf porn features yet. Huge amount but not cluttered in any way. Everything set out neatly and easily accessed. Fantastic job.

I always like best the collections that are a healhy mix of readables and other items like original art and statues. And this was a perfect example of that.

Wonderful, simply wonderful. I love your layout and display. I respect a collection with that much effort put into the presentation. Nice clean photos for us to enjoy as well. Thank you.

What is the print above the tv of?

Amazing.

One the best, if not THE best collections and presentations, I’ve seen here. You should both be very proud.

Nice collection. Where did you get your display case for your statues and your bookshelves from?

Totally jealous of the Superboy and Krypto art pieces!!

Wow, beautiful presentation! I think this is my favorite Shelf Porn yet. I’m so so so so so jealous of that Superboy/Krypto piece by Manapul. Would you mind telling me where you found those book shelves? I’m in desperate need of new ones, and those look perfect for what I want to do.

Wow that must have cost a lot. Nicely organized. Definitely the best shelf porn yet.

@maniacmatt

Those bookshelves are the Expedit model from Ikea. I have Ikea’s Billy bookshelves with height extensions for my collection.

Hey Everyone,

Thank you for all the great comments.

-Nicholas: I’ve got a mount for the sword, it just hasn’t gone up yet. And that’s our guest room…the master bedroom is one of the few rooms that doesn’t have any memorbilia.

-Z: No not a billion. Not yet at least.

BG: I must confess that there are a few books on the shelves that I haven’t made my way to yet, but not too many.

-Todd: The print above the TV is a scene of Drizzt Do’Urden fighting off orcs, trolls and a giant. If you look closely you can see Guenhwyvar in the upper right of the picture. The artwork was done by Todd Lockwood.

-Jeff: Both the display cases and the bookshelves are from Ikea. As Rich mentioned the bookshelves are the Expedit model. The large display case is Norden shelf system. The smaller cases were a product that Ikea used to carry, but I have not seen them there for quite some time. A nice feature of the Expedit’s is that they come with hardware to secure them to the wall (which I did for all of mine). Gives me a bit of peace of mind to know they won’t fall over.

-Maniacmatt: Rich is correct, those are the Expedit shelves.

Dude you’re missing a Storm statue from your x-men collection. Get on that.

Wow. I love your “library” section the best. What kind of shelves are those, and where can you get them?

First, give me that Sweet Tooth art! :D

Second, I was at an awesome comic store today, and this collection rivals their stock. :O

Love it.

Absolutley MASSIVE collection. Love the way you’ve got everything organized.

I want to go to there.

Fantastic, really appreciate you sharing this with us. As much as i understand the digital revolution (and am not anti it), this reminds me of is severe shortcomings in terms of allowing us, to what ever degree you like, create our physical living environement with the things we enjoy and that say something about who we are.

All I can say is ‘Fark me!!!!!’ This has truly been the money shot of the shelf porn series. Kudos! Honestly, my keyboard is covered in duff!

Now that is some shelf porn.

Errrmmm…Who is going to want to follow that display???????

not sure i can add anything new, but wonderful impressive collection

I was going to send my “room” in until I saw this room.

This is an amazing collection. Great organization and just a ton of amazing books and statues and art.

Fantastic collection! Absolutely love the SWEET TOOTH art! Wow!

How long does it take to dust all of that?

@ jeremy. that is the only bad thing about the setup–the dusting! great collection though, i have some of the same statues. thanks for sharing your awesome collection!

great collection man!

The jealousy I have for this collection will send me to hell!

Amazing.
